Should I add a Coton de Tulear to my family?

by Tracy
(United States)

I have two Cavachons (mom is a bishon dad is the cavalier) & I was asked last night if I would be interested in adopting a pure bred female coton de tulear.

I'd never heard of the breed until last night - The dog is a 2 year old female she is very small 6-8lbs. She has had one litter of puppies & they all died - It was decided by the breeder that has her that she would be better as a house dog as opposed to a breeding dog.

The two dogs I have now are 2 years old & almost a year old - They are very friendly, loving dogs - I'm unsure of adopting a dog that is 2 years old & of having 3 dogs - We were raised with dogs & I am a dog lover - Any advice you can give me would be very much appreciate - Thank you so much - I look forward to hearing from you!

I had 2 older dogs when we adopted JR - Pepe our little boy (Toy Poodle) was 17 years young and Kuddles our Lhaso was 15 - when we adopted JR - he was between 4 and 5 years old. They were introduced in the yard and I didn't have any problems. We now have Kuddles 16 1/2, JR 5 and Little Boy a Maltese 2 - Little Boy isn't to happy with Kuddles but JR and Little Boy are like brothers. When we got Kuddles at 8 years old, we had Pepe and Filipa - two boys. We took them to meet her since she was coming from Kansas to Michigan. It was a disaster when they meet. We almost didn't adopt her. We took her home and from that time on they were fine. Good Luck - listen to the small voice inside. Usually a female and male will get along better - but that's not always the case. Like I said Jr and Little Boy are BEST buds.

adopt or not?
by: Iris Miller

It is a blessing to save a life and adopt when you have the opportunity. But, not when you have serious doubt and end up regretting your decision. As you will find written here, among all the experiences related here, We Coton lovers under all circumstances love our Cotons and I have never seen a mention of regret.
Cotons are very intelligent, intuitive, independent minded, and a loving devoted companion. My3 year old Coton Tuffy has a very distinctive sense of humor, I swear he laughs and smiles, and he loves to play. If you decide to accept her into your "pack" so will your other dogs. I agree with other writer, the grooming is imperative because their hair gets matted(not fur, no shedding, no allergic dander) it must be combed and brushed. (keeping it in a puppy cut for summer is a go idea.) Best of luck to both you and the Coton.I hope some gets her save from being euthanized because of the loss of her pups. The thought makes me sick and angry at breeders . I hope she gets a loving home.
Love and blessings,
Iris and Tuffy

3 dogs
by: Sherry

I got two female toy poodle pups (14 wks) last July and then a month later, a 14 week old female Coton. The obvious difference in my situation from yours is that they grew up together, they are all now just 13-14 months old. Cinderella (the Coton) was very unsure of us and though she loved to be petted and loved to play, she wouldn't go for tummy rubs and wouldn't sit on our laps for any great length of time. It took a very long time for her to trust us. The poodles were trusting sweet lap dogs from the beginning. But now Cindy is just as sweet and loving as any dog can be, and she is just a bit more mellow. She has turned into the mother of the group and we all just adore her. I just want to say that if you do decide to get the Coton, you will need to be extremely patient. They do take a while to really feel comfortable and trusting. She will come around though. Three dogs are a handful, but I love each one as if they were my kids! At least you won't have to potty train 3 at once! If it wasn't for my husband, I think I would get another Coton. They are wonderful. Good luck.

Be fair to your other dogs
by: Libby

We adopted a 6 month old coton a few months ago. We took our Golden Retriever with us when we met the dog to make sure they were compatible. I knew our Golden would be fine as she is a real lover. They seemed to hit it off just great so we agreed to adopt the dog. However, the dog was very timid and spooky around us. It took me over two months to make up to the dog and to actually leave him off the lease, but now he is very loving towards me, but not so much my husband - so we still have a ways to go. It is a work in progress and with a lot of love and patience I'm sure my husband will eventually win him over as well. Make sure you bring your other dogs with you with you when you meet the coton to see how they mix. If they like each other I'm sure it will be a win win situation. Cotons are very sweet dogs, very intelligent and eager to please. Good luck.

Adding a Coton to my 2 Cavachons
by: Tracy

Thank you all for your comments - This is such a hard decision - Unfortunately the breeder lives a good distance from where we live - He has emailed me several photo's but I will not be able to meet the dog - For those of you who do have 3 dogs - Was adding the 3rd dog to your family a big adjustment? The Coton I've been asked to consider adopting is 2 years old...not a puppy by any meant - She was bred once & all of her puppies died - I don't know why

Thank you for any comments or suggestions!

Should I add a Coton de Tulear to my family?
by: Terry

First off how well do you know this breeder? This is extremely important so you know how the dog was treated. We have a very loving female Coton who loves to be with her family. I will say they are not fans of being alone. Extremely playful with bouts of endless energy. Our Coton gets along with other dogs that she meets and is extremely protective of her home. Everyone who who meets her loves her in an instant. Always happy and cuddly, never bites but I have heard that some give off some attitude at times but ours does not. Lots of grooming required to keep they're coat mat free. But for that you receive all the above. Tough decision for you as 2 is a lot and 3 will be a handful.
