From the Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

"The anal gland is referred to as the "scent" sac. In the dog they appear to be of use in the territorial marking, & enable dogs to ID one another." IE sniffing at the rear. "It is usual practice in grooming parlors to express the glands before bathing the dog, thus keeping him free of "doggy" odor afterward." "In most cases it is not necessary to express the glands unless there is some medical reason to do so. However, when frequent odor does pose a problem (for ex., in a dog with overactive anal sacs), you can control it by expressing the sacs yourself."

Impaction of Anal Sacs
"Impaction of the anul sacs occurs when the sacs fail to empty normally. It is most common in the smaller breeds. Some of the commom causes are soft stools (not enough sphincter pressure), small anal sac openings, & overactive anal sacs. Secretions become thick & pasty. Anal sac impaction is treated by manuel emptying."

Anal Sac Infection
"This condition complicates impaction, It is recognized by the presence of blood or pus in the secretions, signs of anal pain, & scooting." Treatment: Consult Vet for an antibiotic preparation.

Anal Sac Abcess
"Dogs w/recurrent anal infections need to have their glands removed."

My Notes: Scooting & Chewing can be signs of dried poop on the rear area. The suggestion of bran from the dr. comes into play where it gives substance to the poop so the glands work properly. Online their are cookie & meatloaf recipes where bran is an ingredient or can be substituted or just added. Good luck.

do not express my dog's anal glands!
by: Iris Miller

IWhen I was taking Tuffy to groomers I always had to tell them not to, and many said it was "routine" and I had to get angry and tell them not to express the anal glands on my dog! Any time they did (anyway) my poor Tuffy was miserable and dragging his butt on the carpet afterwards, that is how I knew hey messed with him. My Vet said it was not necessary. Now I am his only groomer, the only time he rarely starts to "scoot" is about a half hour or more after he eats and drinks and I am not noticing he needs to go out and poop. it is almost as if he is try to push it back in, waiting for me to take him out. 'Then I notice and take him out, he poops right away and then he is fine.

Bran Cookies
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

I use alot of recipes where u can use most people food in cookies Etc. Bran, wheat germ etc to help. I am assumming what the vet is going for is that when they poop daily it also will releases anal fluid naturally. Knowing that once u start with anul glands it is hard to stop & I would think with a show dog it was done alot.

It might be something to discuss with ur vet when people bring a puppy home & decide to have them groomed weather to start the discharge of the anul gland. U can have them groomed & not let them start discharging the anul gland.

I have always found inbetween baths that by using a cotton ball with a little baby shampoo on it & cleaning their butt area this helps them eliminate better. Stimulating that area also helps the anul glands.

It also helps with a Coton to use the same technique on their belly since they luv to lick themselves & this area tends to get sticky from food & such. Jonah thou fixed, by taking a min. when needed tends to to spend less time licking thia area. :-) Good luck to u.

anal glands removed
by: Laura

We have two cotons, only one was bothered by it. We had her anal glands removed. It wasn't fun and I held her for the few days she took to recover. We were having to have her glands expressed every wk. It has been years, but she is FINE.

Oh yes!
by: Nicole

My Bailey does the same thing. My vet is, thankfully, right next door to my groomer and has told me to pop by anytime I have him groomed. We've had a couple of very unfortunate (and painful for Bailey) blowouts. Poor thing gets inflamed and then just erupts before we have much time to do anything about it.

Hadn't heard about the bran buds, though. Please let us know how that works out! Anything I can do to keep him from going through that again!
