Red staining on coat

by Mazzle
(Ann Arbor, MI)

I just got a Coton, and his coat seems to have some odd red staining around his mouth and on his extremities. Does anyone have any idea what would cause this?

Red stains from food
by: Iris Miller

Hi, I was told the red staining around my dog's eyes and mouth was from red beets used to color most dog foods and treats. I wash daily around his eyes and mouth with a cotton pad and lukewarm water. I stopped buying any treats with red color and use only natural freeze dried meat treats and sometimes rawhide knots for Tuffy to chew. He is also on the IAMS small dog dry food which I supplement with a small amount of Natural Balance lamb log. No more red staining.

Food?
by: Anonymous

Our Coton had the same problem. The vet said it was because he wasn't on a high quality dog food. We switched to Iams and the red went away. Good luck!

itchy dog??
by: Anonymous

This happens to my dog when she gets itchy and starts nibbling her paws. I don't know the technical reasons, but somehow her saliva turns her coat reddish purple. If your dog is itching for any reason this may be something to look into.
