Question about the Canine Dental Vaccine

by Dee
(Floral Park, NY)

My Vet has talked me into getting our Coton de Tulear, Spanky, the Canine Dental Vaccine. I can't seem to find any current info on the web for this. Has anyone else heard about it? Has your vet recommended it? Has anyone had it for their Coton?

Still debating on whether or not to go through with it so any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Oral health
by: DIane

Its suppose to stimulate the animal's immune system to kill the three bacteria associated with periodontitis in dogs. Along with the shot you are still required to brush your pets teeth. There isn't enough evidence based on clinical trials to say it works. I am a vet tech and we do not offer the shot. We highly recommend owners brush their pets teeth and/or use additives you put in the water that helps maintain oral health. I own a coton and he gets his teeth brushed twice a week and I give him 1/2 a CET chew every night after dinner( they help keep his teeth clean as he chews them and he LOVES them). He has great teeth and he's 7. Its not hard to brush your pets teeth- use a small toothbrush made for dogs or a gauze pad and your pinky finger. Be sure to use toothpaste made for canines!

Dog dental care
by: Gale

Is Spanky having dental problems? Small dogs like the Coton are sometimes prone to dental disease which can be very dangerous - heart, lung, and kidney damage can occur as a result.

There are many options to care for your dog's teeth, so I'm wondering why your Vet wouldn't opt for those instead.

The fact that you're asking the question indicates that you don't feel comfortable with it. If Spanky isn't having dental issues, maybe you should hold off - at least until you feel confident that it's 100% safe and that there aren't better alternatives.

Let us know what you decide and how Spanky's doing.

DENTAL VACCINE
by: KATHY

HI
AS WITH LYNDA, MY VET IS PRETTY MUCH OLD SCHOOL TOO. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY A DOG WOULD NEED A DENTAL VACCINE? I AM MOST HESITANT TO GIVE TRISCUIT ANY KIND OF MEDS OR VACCINES THAT REALLY ARE NOT NECCESSARY SINCE SHE HAD A REACTION TO THE 3 YEAR RABIES SHOT. ALSO, TUFFY AS I REMEMBER HAD A REACTION TO ADVANTIX. IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO SEE IF ANYONE ELSE HAS HEARD OF THIS. NEXT SATURDAY I WILL BE TAKING TRISCUIT TO THE MUTT STRUTT HERE IN PA AND THERE WILL BE A FEW MORE VETS AROUND TO ASK SOME QUESTIONS TO,SO I WILL TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF THAT AND WILL HOPEFULLY HAVE MORE INFO ON THAT THAT I CAN PASS ON. I am interested
by: Lynda Owen

I have not heard of such a thing either, but that doesnt say much. The Vet i go to is old school and isnt one of the newer high tech places, but practices based on his 30+ years in the business. I suppose this is the down side to that, so any info you get i will appreciate hearing. Good luck, lynda
