Puppy one day up next day down???

I just want to know if anyone else has issues with their pup being real active, energized, eating well for a few days or so and then they get up and don't want to eat anything and just crawl back into bed until evening time.

Bijou is 5 months now and he has always been up and down with how he is feeling. I have had labs and urine checked and all is good. I can not make sense of what is going on with him. He sleeps in his crate in my room and I is totally quiet all night so I assume he is sleeping. We were going to go to a dog fly ball tournament today just to watch, but he won't eat and I tried chicken and rice, and all he wants to do is sleep.

Is this some kind of trait with the Cotons? He is active, I have him in a star puppy class, we go for walks every day and play all the time. I just don't get it. He gets into nothing, I am very vigilant with my supervision. Thanks for any feed back. I know his teeth are bothering him. He just lost his first canine and another is loose. Thanks, Debbie

Diet NEW
by: Anonymous

I was reading some of the comments and it reminded me of a friend of mine whose daughter had a sensitivity to wheat. She would be fine for a few days and the wheat and other grains would build up in her system and then she would get sick on the 4th or 5th day then not want to eat. Maybe try a grain-free food?

Puppy NEW

Hi Debby!
It appears to be a pattern and one that a vet needs to check on. It maybe a digestive issue and something that can be looked at more closely through the right tests. Trust your gut and take your baby in. Keep us posted on results.

Puppy one day up next day down??? NEW
by: Debbie

Thanks for your feedback. Bijou is still doing the same stuff. He will go maybe 3days eating really well and then he won't want anything to do with any food. He gets up in the am goes pee and then crawls back into his bed for the day. He has a tendency to come alive when it is time to go to bed. I just don't get it he doesn't seem like a normal puppy. I get they take naps throughout the day, but he doesn't play or have anything to do with anyone or thing. Then another day he could wake up and be full of himself. I'm not getting this up and down thing with him. Also when he does eat he gets hiccups while he is eating and it becomes 4 a 5 fast pulses one after another. The first time he did this I thought he was going to vomit. I'm thinking of having my vet X-ray his belly to see if everything looks normal. I know that when he doesn't eat he acts sickly, and when he does then he acts lively and playful. I am still hand feeding him and will put food on his tongue to get him going but it doesn't always work. I have to say this is the most difficult dog I have ever had and I have had dogs all my life and I'm 63. He is in advanced basic obedience and when he gets like this we can't even practice his homework. Thanks for your feed back. Sorry this became so long. It's hard to explain.

Up & down NEW
by: Vicky & Jonah

When u say u walk every day plus classes their is a thing as to much exercise for growing bones where it actually is worse not better long walks. Not eating I think their r days they all do that. As long as they have pooped in the morning b4 hand they will eat. Their r those days where they just don't in the morning & that's ok.

I'm assuming u feed twice a day so if they don't eat in the morning cont giving them only 1/2 at night. Do not feed full amount. Y, just put a pc. Of dog food in water & let it sit until expanded.

Also always try & walk b4 breakfast. If not u must wait 1 hr b4 walking after food.

Also whatever u r using for training treats & just treats r subtracted from food amount. That is y when young measure out their food & use it for training. When they get older they get smarter & then doesn't always work. That is y most of us use liver for classes.

U can find on web exercise for age & weight dog in walking time. Other then that depending on the activity in ur classes maybe not walk or just very short.

Good luck

One day up NEW

My little coton had upset an upset tummy, I discovered I wasn't rinsing her bowls well enough. Now rinse in very hot water. I rince and rince. Now she never gets an upset tummy. This could be one reason your little coton is not eating.

Makes sense, a tooth issue can cause issues!! If this is a long term pattern, then it may be something else.It this is just a short term thing, maybe just going through growing splurt and new teeth!!

Coton's energy NEW
by: Donna

I am not sure if that is a Coton thing, as I have two. They do have a lot of energy and rest and nap for a few hours here and there. I would want answers too, asking a breeder or vet?If there was an incredible busy or overly active day the day before they sleep a lot is only answer I have?!
Few months back, my one Coton a year old, did not eat for two days and was ill and never knew why. We think she got into something? Vet was puzzled too. I wish I could help here I just am not sure if this is a breed issue and would benefit to hear from an expert. Keep us posted!!!!

I have an 11 yr old male and the only time he acts this way is when he has toothaches.
