Our Coton de Tulear is losing her hair

by Dennis

Our 10 year old female Coton de Tulear has started to lose her hair. The hair, on her body, including her tail, is thinning.

We have not changed groomers and they don't know why Kiwi's coat has changed. Due to constipation issues last winter, we went from all dry food to half dry, half canned to increase moisture intake. Both are high quality foods from Blue.

Lastly, she became fearful of the fireworks this 4th of July so we thought the nervousness may have caused the hair loss. I hope you can help.

Coton de Tulear Hair Loss
by: Gale

I'm wondering if Kiwi has been to the Vet to determine the cause of the hair loss. It's hard to know how to treat the problem when you don't know the cause. Treatment might vary depending on whether she has a health issue such as thyroid problems, Cushings disease, food, flea or environmental allergies, infections, mange, alopecia, etc.

And yes, anxiety can certainly cause hair loss as well.

Some suggestions:

  • Definitely see a Vet if you haven't already

  • Learn more about dog skin problems here; to learn about treating various types of allergies. The most common treatments include antihistamines, weekly baths with gentle soothing ingredients, anti-inflammatory topical ointments, tranquilizers that help reduce itching and antibiotics and cortisone for extreme cases. Definitely work with your Vet to determine best treatment.

  • If your dog isn't already on flea prevention that's always an easy fix. Fleas are a large factor in skin and coat problems and can easily be solved by using flea prevention treatments like Advantage or Frontline.

  • Have you tried any herbal remedies? I've tried a few with mixed results. I've just ordered Skin-eze for my dog who suffers with itching due to allergies. There are claims that this product has helped dogs with hair loss. I haven't tried it yet but will definitely report back with the results. I am always looking for long term solutions that are safe for Luc.
