Need advice about nervous resuce Coton de Tulear

by Gary

Hi I have two coton de tulear dogs - both came from homes for battered dogs. The female has recovered very well where as the male is still very nervous around men and barks non stop once we leave the house. Both dogs are lovely although I do worry a little about the male although things are better it is taking a long time to see any real improvement. Any advice will be appreciated.

Nervous Rescues
by: Vicky from Az

Don't forget dog parks & use the small dog side.
I have seen it take up to 3 months for a dog to come out from sitting between ur legs to start wondering around or playing.
Thats ok thou look at the vitamin D u will get from the sun & the new friends u may meet.
Every one there is just waiting for a new face to come over to them to rub there bellies.
Good luck

Update
by: Gary

Thanks for your advice, I think patience is what it will take, I have been traveling for the last ten days returning over the weekend, he was all over me for a few hours like a long lost friend :-). Now he is a little calmer but over all it is better than when I left, he is still fearful of men but that would be normal after suffering like he did. In any case both dogs are great fun...

Confidence
by: Mike

Try playing "tug" with him. By that I mean let him try to pull a toy away from you. Put up some resistence but eventually let him win. It's an aggressive game and winning makes them feel like top dog. If you don't mind him on the couch, you might experiment with height; the dog with the high ground is in charge. Might want to let him up on the couch. The other Coton probably won't care, and he'll feel like he's in charge. I've noticed on nights when there are thunderstorms and I let my Coton sleep on the bed, she's much more confident the next day. Height is status I guess.
