Picky Eater too NEW
by: Scarlett

I have two 2 yr old Cotons. They are brother and sister. The male will eat most anything. The female is another story. If she had her way, her life would revolve around freshly cooked liver and Omega treats with an occasional honey graham cookie and raw hides wrapped with duck jerky. I have tried every food imaginable and she turns her nose up at everything. She I currently on day 3 of refusing wet food( has never touched dry food). She won't eat cheese, cooked chicken or beef. So when I read these stories of fussy eaters, I feel your pain!

Tuffy's health NEW
by: Iris

I notice I had posted a year ago here about Tuffy's diet. Please note as I recently posted, he's had bladder surgery for stones and now must remain on a prescription dog food only. I donated all of the other dog food he was used to.
The crystals his bladder is making are calcium oxalate and can cause reoccurring bladder stones. He's on both dry and canned Royal Canin Urinary SO. This food is supposed to make him drink more water to keep the urine diluted and hopefully prevent crystals from forming stones. The Vet said not to give him anything else. I did try and it's true, he prefers people food and won't eat the dog food if given a choice. I need to keep him on low to no oxalate foods if I decide not to use dog food. Please make sure your dog drinks a lot of water. This disorder is common in small dogs. Something I never even heard of until my dog couldn't pee because the urethra was blocked with stones.

My coton is the same he has royal canine and I always give him scrambled egg on a morning which he wolfs down , I give him fresh boiled chicken or boiled cod with carrots and also tuna but he picks the royal canine out and sometimes eats the rest but not always , he drives me mad I'm worried he isn't eating enough , He is my first coton and I'm used to having staffys who are normally very greedy so I get anxious when he is not eating enough.

Wont Eat
by: Vicky & Jonah

Sometimes since in most foods they recommend 1-11/3 cups we forget that daily if they get treats u consider that in the amount of food they get.

I've always been one w/the dry add a measuring spoon tablespoon of boiled chicken. I'll smash a bouillon cube & throw a little in. Other then that I'll sometimes do a burger of beef or turkey again use the tablespoon as a size. U can give them tuna fish save a dab whn u make a sandwich water or oil is fine. Cottage cheese is also good.

Other then that I use pro plan focus small breed dry & I will buy the soft in the tub it contains alot of meat & sweet pots & other depending on flavor. I usually freeze half out of the tub since I feed twice a day will give him something diff on top then I did in morn & usually a variety.

When I make supper if we have beef or grd turkey I make up like 4 little burgers & put it between glad press & seal throw in freezer so u can cut of 1 whn u want. The same w/ chicken I'll cut up small pcs & pull from freezer whn needed. Drop in a bowl of water & they thaw quickly or throw in fridge to thaw out. The chicken takes left then 20 mins to cook.

U can throw in water right w/press & seal. Hope any of this helped.

Picky eater
by: Sharon

My Jasmine (8 months) will eat just about anything but some times gets a little picky and slow eater on her main dry dog food. I just add a tiny bit of shredded cheese, swirl it around and she eats it like a starving crazed dog. Works like a charm. I just met a man who use to train police bomb dogs, He said they used hotdogs as treats! Said works great. Here's hoping if he can train a dog to sniff out a bomb with small pieces of hot dog, I can at least get my dog to go to the door when she has to potty. I don't like the idea of hot dogs as I am vegetarian but may be worth it in the long run. Any thoughts?

My dog refuses foods too
by: Iris

Tuffy is also a picky coton. He turns his nose up at most dog treats and food. He gets IAMS with probiotics for small dogs as his basic food, and eats mostly that on his midnight snack raid. He gets some chopped Natural Balance Lamb dog food roll on top of his dry dog food. That flavor is the only one of that brand he will tolerate. I also give him small amounts of chopped up chicken, baked sweet potato, canned Albacore tuna, baked fresh salmon, and some cooked ground beef and carrot. Not all of these at once, and not all in the same week. ie: If I have a tuna sandwich he will get about two tablespoons of smashed up drained tuna I leave over in the can for him. (I use a can opener that does not leave a sharp edge!) He also gets Pure Bites freeze dried beef liver treats in his Kong toy. He won't eat any treats with any additives or vitamins in it. My dog is a Purist. Tuffy is 6 years old and has maintained his weight between 9 and 10 lbs. P.S. He also does not want to eat if he hasn't gone poop, and if he does eat when his bowels are full, he throws up whatever he ate.

won't eat
by: joyce/pierre

I have the same problem. I tried giving Pierre all the best dog foods. Blue, Wellness, Organics etc. etc. Dry and wet. He won't touch the wet. The only way I can get him to eat dog food is if I mix organic chicken, organic meat or plain Greek yogurt in it. He does like veggies & apples. Sometimes a little cottage cheese or ricotta. He like yams. For treats I get Trader Joes organic chicken sticks for dogs. I feel it is important to give him the dog food for the vitamins/nutrition.

Probiotics?
by: Anonymous

My Heathcliff, while still picky, started eating more consistently when I started giving him a daily probiotic. We use Proviable-DC, available on Amazon. I also feed an alkaline diet -- cooked turkey/chicken/beef and veggies for dinner and freeze-dried raw, Stella & Chewy's, for his lunch.

Mine's a Picky eater too
by: Anonymous

Glad to know I'm not the only one with a picky eater. I add wet food (Urr from Iceland) in with the high quality kibble and sometimes just some moist and meaty. It seems he likes the new stuff for awhile and then gets bored with it and won't eat again. He really just wants people food. I made the mistake of giving him food while I was eating. This just made matters worse, so I don't do that anymore. Sometimes I just leave the food in the bowl and I notice he eats it late at night, when I'm not looking. These dogs are so smart....sometimes I think he is just manipulating me for people food!!

How we get our dogs to eat
by: Anonymous

I buy jars of baby food (meat, ham turkey, beef, chicken). I use blue buffalo also. Mix a teaspoon of the baby food with the blue buffalo and a teaspoon of warm water. Get a little meat on your finger, let you dog lock a little, swipe it on the inside of the bowl (let him see you) and put the bowl down. We have or dogs on a feeding schedule. It takes a bit to get them used to it, AND We Feed Them Their Evening Meal After We Have Eaten. They won't eat if we feed them during or before our meal because they want people food. Hope this helps

Eating habits of Cotons
by: Anne Glenmoore PA

We have a very picky eater as well. We give her very good food. Blue Buffalo with some Merrick wet food (which is 97% meat). Then I make beef cubes or chicken to sprinkle on top. Add carrots (this is out of desperation). I spend more time trying to get her to eat. She wants people food. So I can be of no help.
