My Coton de Tulear is having Seizures every 3 weeks or so!

by DeeDee
(Annandale, NJ)

Hi
My Coton de Tulear is 4-1/2 years old and started having seizures 4 months ago. They happen every 3 weeks or so. Our vet said monitor them and she may have to go on medication.

Is this common with Cotons? We love Scarlet so much and we want to do what's best for her and would prefer not to give her drugs. We changed all food to natural food and she is a happy, healthy and playful dog.

Please let me know if there are any suggestions on what can be done to help her.
thanks,
DeeDee

Heartbreaking
by: Gale

I am so sorry for your loss - what a heartbreaking story. It's obvious that you loved your Coton and I hope in time you will come to know that it wasn't your fault. Some things are just beyond our control. My deepest condolences.

Take him to different vets now!!
by: Anonymous

My Cotton died 2 days ago just for his 2nd birthday. I am destroyed. Yes, he started having seizures 1 year ago, I took him to 3 different vets and no one could come up with a good diagnostic. He died 5 minutes after I came back from work, I cannot forget the look on his eyes when he finally gave up. I will blame myself forever for not taking him to 100 vets if necessary, if you love yours please do it.

My Coton is Having Seizures Also
by: Pam

I have two Cotons. Both of them will be two years old the first week of December. One of them is seizure free, but the other one is not. She had her first seizure about two and a half months ago. She had the second one almost 2 months later to the date, and tonight she had her third one 3 weeks after that. I've had blood work done on her, and they did a portal scan to see if she had a liver shunt. That test came back negative. My vet told me the same thing, to monitor how often she has one and the severity of it. Tonight's seizure lasted longer than the other two and it seemed to be worse in severity than the other two. I researched it a little bit, and we are going to change a few things. I am not going to give her tap water anymore, and I will look for an enzymatic supplement to start giving to her, as well as looking into food and treats that are higher quality than what I currently feed them. We have 4 dogs, and she is the only one having seizures. I hope all works out for you and your pup.

siezures
by: Iris Miller

Years ago I had a toy Pomeranian puppy that had seizures and had to be put on medication for the rest of his life. Because there was no one to stay home with him he was adopted out to a family with other dogs and small children with the mom home to care for him,he was on meds and and he seemed to be doing much better. He rarely had a seizure with them, and I think when he was with me it may have been triggered by stress when he was home alone, then got overly excited when we came home.
Now I am retired and have Tuffy, a Coton 3 years old now, When he was a little puppy he did this spastic hop that scared me, I thought "oh no, not another one with seizures". I realized after a while, this was a behavioral action, like a hiccup, it was an attention getter. He rarely does it any more, and I think when he does, it may actually be a hiccup!
My best wishes and prayers go out to you. I hope your dog lives a long happy and healthy life.

Seizures
by: Vicky from Az

I am very interested in any feedback since Jonah turns 4 in Dec. I have had this happen to my Silky, Donavan but he was 13. There also was not a head injury involved. I have heard this can be a heredity problem in these two breeds according to "Dogs 101".
