Matting of the fur?

by Karen Ferguson
(Sweden)

My husband and I have recently inherited an 11 year old Coton, Isabelle Key to my Heart. That is her full name, but we normally call her Isabelle, but I like to call her Turtle, as she can procrastinate when it's something she doesn't want to do, like getting a bath or being combed.

She reluctantly accepts being bathed, and we do this every other week, but sometimes more often when she is soiled.

But she absolutely hates to be brushed or combed. She will let my husband comb her fur for a few minutes each evening, preferring he focuses on her back. She has matting on her paws, around her neck and on her chest, that she doesn't like him to work on.

When we first got her, we took her to a groomer who said we needed to shave her, as the matting was too far gone. We did so, and kept her in cute sweaters and coats when we Went out. It's six months later and her fur is Beautiful, but yup matted again.

How can we solve this? Any great Tools that make it easy to remove the matting without bothering the dog?

Any ideas you can share would be appreciated.

Sincerely yours,
Karen

Brushing
by: Lulu & Socrates

It is a lot of work to keep up with long hair.
If your little one was not brushed and combed regularly, she probably will not enjoy the grooming.
I brush and comb Socrates twice a day with Chris Christesen brushes and combs, a total of 6. He gets quick brushing and combing twice a day, and every other day he get full brushing, underarms and belly. Also you can use a tangle free spray product.

If she likes treats, you can reward her after the grooming with treats or grooming. Good luck.

PS Karen and "turtle" matting hair
by: Iris

The Groomer will be able to recommend good grooming tool like the professionals use . A Coton has hair like humans, not fur like other animals.

Matted hair
by: Iris

Karen, bless you for keeping "turtle"
The Coton needs constant grooming and yes, their hair matts up easily, it's not good to bathe a dog too often as they can develop skin problems . My Coton has had to be shaved down several times because of matting.insread of coats and sweater try to comb and brush the hair when it is short and manageable. There is a lot here and othe websites on care and grooming of this special breed.
Find a good groomer and see if you can get a special rate for continued periodic grooming to keep her hair a manageable length, and a good pedicure. She deserves it.
Best wishes and love from Iris and Tuffy🐶
