Is my dog a Coton?

by miia
(Los Angeles, CA)

We found our little Gypsy about a year ago on a cold rainy night in front of our house eating trash. Long story short, he is now part of our family and is inseparable with my hubby. Since we take our dogs everywhere with us, people often ask us what breed he is. Our vet just told us he might be a Maltese, but we think he is way to big to be a Maltese (16-17 lb). So we are always curious what he might be, but regardless what he is, we love him the same.

When I was reading the personality of Coton, it's exactly describing our Gypsy. He is about 16-17 lb, extremely friendly with everyone (dogs, kids, people). He is very eager to please, very playful and mischievous. He has a very pronounced black nose and long nostril. He doesn't shed, and has pure white coat.

Here are some of his recent photos (after he got cleaned up. When we first found him, he was brown dog). I would greatly appreciate if someone cam give us some input on his possible identity. Thanks in advance~!

DNA testing?
by: Gale

Unfortunately, none of the DNA testing sites that I've found include the Coton in the list of breeds that they test for. They tend to test for the most popular breeds and rare dogs like the Coton are not in their testing database. But... they do add breeds all the time so maybe some time in the future there will be a way to do DNA testing for the Coton.

dna my dog
by: Anonymous

he looks to me like some kind of maltese or lhasa apso mix. possibly poodle. it's hard to say, and I'm no expert. but, there's a website called DNA my dog that I found through a local shelter website you could try out. it's a little pricey, but if you really want to know, it would be worth it.

Tall

How lucky you all are. Gypsy looks like the rare tall Coton. His legs are longer than the average. He's adorable.

Gypsy
by: Gale

Gypsy sure does look like he's a Coton or is at least part Coton. Some times the Maltese and Coton can look alike if they have similar haircuts. The coat can usually help distinguish the two - they both have soft coats, but the Coton's coat texture is cotton-like and the Maltese is silky. Gypsy's height is also more in line with a Coton. He's definitely a cutie no matter what he is. He's so lucky to have wandered into your life.

Is my dog a Coton?
by: Joyce

I had the same problem - JR was gotten from a Shelter and they said he was Maltese Poodle. His body frame is different from a Maltese of Poodle. We think he's a Coton too. He's a cutie.
Good Luck - he sure looks like one.
