injuries to my Coton

I have a four year old white Coton that has a right hind leg torn ligament and they want to do surgery. Has anybody had this done to thier dog and does it work? I'm worried to death what i should do. My coton doesn't seem to be hurting other than she picks her leg to walk or run

TPLO surgery NEW
by: Sandra, Edinburgh

Sorry should have said in my earlier post that Spikey was only 2 when he had his first surgery and had just turned 3 when he got his second. He did it running in the park after his ball. He let out a yelp and then would not use the leg. Good luck. Please let us know how you get on.

TPLO surgery NEW
by: Sandra, Edinburgh

Hi, yes my half coton (crossed with shihtzu) has had ruptured cruciate ligaments in both knees (hind legs). The first time the surgeon waited 8 weeks as he said sometimes small dogs can heal on their own. After waiting though my coton Spikey was still limping and not much better so he had the surgery done. Be warned the surgery is only 2 hours but expensive. Then starts the hard bit which is 3 months of supervision where the dog cannot do stairs or jump on furniture or get off his lead. That said I think it is the only option for this type of injury. My surgeon warned that when the dog suffers this injury they have a high chance of also doing it to the other leg. Sure enough Spikey ruptured the other hind leg knee ligament only 4 months later. I recommend you get the surgery but make sure you have a cage for afterwards and book some time off work at least for the 1st week. Hope that helps. Sandra and Spikey, Edinburgh P.S. Make sure you go to a specialised orthopedic surgeon and not just a general surgeon who says he can do it. Also TPLO seems to be the best surgery to get.

Leg surgery NEW
by: Anonymoussally

My Zoe had surgery on her left leg . Her tiny knee socket kept slippping out. When they were doing the surgery she also had a torn ligament. They corrected both and she did great. Then about 2 years later, she had to have surgery on the other knee. Ever since she has just been great. She may walk a little funny but she us not in any pain and is very happy. She would have been horribly crippled if she did not have surgery.
