I can't leave my dog alone

Need help with separation anxiety for my new Coton puppy. Yesterday, I just got my first Coton, a 10 week old female named Clara. If I leave her for even a moment, she begins to chirp like a bird and then becomes quite anxious, and she can get very worked up, with very obstreperous high-pitched "barking" that is unlike anything I've ever heard. It sounds as if a flock of seagulls is being strangled. Is this typical behavior for the getting-to-know-you stage of Cotons?

She would not leave my side at all today and when I left for a moment to shower, you would have thought I was torturing her. Otherwise, she seems quite calm and quiet. I appreciate any insights you may have.

The Sea Gull Noise

My coton made that strange sound whenever I kenneled her and it was agonizing for me to hear. Think of it this way, though: the kennel is an excellent adjunct to training good potty behavior, she needs to learn to increase her bladder control through duration in the box, and, finally, it will become a calm nest for her. I never leave my adult coton more than 4 hours, and for a pup I'd say two.

Separation anxiety help for new puppy

Congratulations on your adoption of Clara. I think a little bit of separation anxiety is normal for many puppies, but Clara seems especially stressed.

Do you know anything about what her life was like before you got her? From everything I've read on separation anxiety, the best thing to do is NOT to reinforce their anxiety by making long drawn-out hellos and goodbyes. And the hardest part is not to cuddle and hug her so she thinks she's getting rewarded. Try to act as normal as possible and she'll pick up on your calmness.
If she's still stressed after a week or so, you may want to contact the Vet and make sure there's nothing more serious.

I have a feeling that she'll calm down when she gets used to her new home.
