How much should a Coton weigh?

by Narita
(Oklahoma)

Bill is almost 18 months old and he weighs a little over 14 pounds. Is this too much for the breed? We don't get a lot of treats and he isn't an excessive eater. He likes food in his bowl but isn't constantly eating or emptying it.

The other day I bathed him and when he was naked (you coton owners know what I mean, all wet and that fine fur looking like nothing) and he didn't look that big. He is big in the chest.
Is Bill overweight? Should I put him on a diet? Thanks! Narita

My Coton is a very solid male. 19 pounds. Very active. Loves the snow and drags me out in it more than I'd like...
2 years old. Winter 2 walks, summer 3-4 walks. Would eat 24/7 if he could. Feed him 2x day. Raw.1 1/2 pattie. Some veggies, tiny bits of cooked chicken on occasion. Can feel natural waistline. Wondering if weight too much ? Every other Coton ( not many ) I have seen is tiny. Mine looks like a brut.

Coton and weight

Our coton is 18.4 pounds and is a healthy, sturdy little fellow. I think what one other post said here is right, not so much the weight but as long as they are healthy --and you can tell when they have a bath if they look about right or too fat or too skinny. We have enjoyed our 18.4 pound little man all these 13 and 1/2 years and still going! You can also ask your vet what they think too. It seems people have gotten their vet's opinions also. Our vet thinks our coton looks real good!

Our girl Sadie weight stays just under 10 lbs. She's just tuned two years. Our breeder advised us to always be aware of her figure and make sure we can feel a natural waistline on her which at her weight we do! Lucky girl! :-) she's a very active and wonderful girl!!

All in all on a dogs weight basically shots should be up dated yearly. Rabies every 3 & the 5&1,7&1 etc many vets call it by diff names updated every yr. Also all vets run specials for the shots to happen.

Please during this time after ur dog is weighed before the shot ask the vet for their input on the weight of ur dog before deciding on any diet plan. By putting a dog on a diet when not needed this can result in affecting bone growth or growth maintenence. It also can affect a dogs temperment if they do not get the right mix of nutrients required.

WHAT TO DO?? Oliver is 20 lbs but not fat. He's just a large one of those. Should he be on a calorie restrictive diet? He gets no grains, only protein and veggies. Three walks a day but not a great amount of exercise other than that. He is healthy and happy but weighs more than the majority of the breed. Any suggestions?

Jonah weighs 17 #'s & is 4.5 yrs old
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

Jonah is not fat. He eats 1 c. of food a day split morn & night. He get usually 3 treats a day 1 milkbone & 2 milkbone marrow treats after last potty call at night.

When we r trick training I use cheerios, freeze dried beef liver, or pupperonis depending on trick (small amounts). We walk daily & visit dog park about 3 times a week. When wet he looks thin LOL.

Last shots at vet in June I asked her did he seem fat to her & she said no. He is just a big Coton. In the UK he would be considered to big to show. Yet to me he is perfect in every way. So enjoy.

YOUR COTON'S WEIGHT SEEMS GOOD TO ME. COTTON IS 26 MONTHS AND IS SUCH A PICKY EATER WE BEG HER TO EAT. SHE WEIGHS 10.3 BUT LOOKS THINNER COMPARED TO OUR NEW ONE WHO WEIGHS ALMOST 15 LBS. SHE IS 4 AND A RESCUE SO MAYBE SHE HAS ALWAYS JUST GOBBLED UP EVERYTHING IN SIGHT...CANDIE SEEMS MUCH STOCKIER IN HER CHEST AND UPPER LEGS, I AM WONDERING IF SHE MAY HAVE SOME POODLE IN HER, HER HAIR IS GETTING TO BE AN INCH OR MORE LONG AND IS VERY CURLY.

SEEMS THERE IS A VARIANCE OF WEIGHT FOR THESE LITTLE DOGS SO IF THEY SEEM HEALTHY AND ACTIVE....HOPEFULLY THEY ARE.

I WORRY ABOUT ONE NOT EATING ENOUGH AND THE OTHER EATING TOO MUCH, FUNNY HOW OBSESSED WE CAN BECOME OVER OUR LITTLE DOGS.

Barney is 21-months old and weighs a little over 15 pounds. We think he is a very sturdy little guy, especially when we can see his physique after a bath - looks like a little muscle man!

Our Daisy is 10lbs. We have a Pomeranian who is 12lbs. I have seen both breeds smaller & larger.
I thimk it depends on the parents & genetics.

My dog weights 15 pounds
by: Heloisa

My coton, Weezer, is a 4 year old male. He weights about 15 pounds and is not fat at all... Actually he looks kinda skinny (but yet muscular), mostly when it's hot here in Brazil and he gets his summer cut, almost with no fur. He is a big coton, that's for sure, but his father, who is a italian champion and standart coton, is just as big...

My vet says he is healthy and his weight is just fine. So, I guess that more important than the weight is the overall healthy of your dog...

Mine too?
by: Melanie

I have wondered the same thing about my female, Holli. She is two and is 12 1/2 pounds, while our male is only 7 1/2 lbs! They are cousins with different genes on opposing sides of the family from what I hear. He takes after a skinny father and she a heavy mom (not related). I haven't gotten a warning from their vet or anything, but understood the males to be 9 to 14 (Henri is waay underweight - runt maybe?) and females from 7 to 9 lbs.

I am curious to know if there are other huge females and/or small males.

Coton Weight
by: Anne/Glenmoore

Our Coton, Molly, is 16 pounds - the doctor said she could lose a pound. I met another Coton recently named Cody and he was 11 pounds. So Molly looked big compared to him. Molly may be "off standard". So I think 14 pounds sounds good.
