How much does your Coton de Tulear cost yearly?

Hi, there are many different dog expenses especially throughout out the first year. How much did your Coton cost in total the first year? (ex: supplies, grooming, vet visits, training, meds, etc.) Do you think the coton is a higher maintenance dog then other breeds?

Thanks! :)

Dog costs
by: Tracy

Hi!
I just got my Coton a couple weeks ago, but from what I've researched, those costs above look about right. I plan to spend less on training - I'm enrolled in a pup Kindergarten class for about $80 and may take one more class this year; hopefully that'll be all we'll need in his first year.

For the food, I'm estimating only about $15/month at first. I'm guessing the 5 pound bag will last about 6 weeks and it costs something like $18. Of course, he'll eat more as he grows, though, of course.

And I think you're right; these are the costs of owning any dog, really. You might have less grooming with another breed, or spend more/less on training, but the first year can be spendy.

The cost of owning a Coton de Tulear
by: Gale

I wasn't sure I wanted to answer this question because I wasn't sure I wanted to think about how much money I spent for my 1st year with Luc. But here goes - here's the breakdown from what I can remember. I'm sure I did a lot of impulse buying but I won't count that.

Costs not counting purchase price of dog:

Vet (wellness check, neuter fee, microchip, vaccine, license, heartworm & flea prevention: $650

Food ($25/month) = 300

Accessories: (bed, crate, baby gate, leashes, collars, toys) = $350 (that I will admit to)

Grooming = $57/month (including tip) = $684

Professional Trainer = $500

Total cost for the 1st year = $2489

This did not include the things Luc destroyed (eye glasses, books, computer wires, etc) because that was totally my fault for not puppy proofing the house adequately.

The grooming costs will vary greatly depending on whether you hire a professional or do it yourself.

Hiring a professional trainer is also not necessary. This was the right choice for me and my lifestyle, but Cotons are pretty smart and learn fast so I don't think it was necessary.

Are Cotons more high maintenance or higher cost than other dogs? I would say that the grooming is the only area that I would say yes. Whether you do it yourself or hire someone, Cotons need grooming attention.

Except for grooming and the actual cost to purchase the dog, the Coton is not any higher maintenance than any other dog that I've owned.

Anyone else brave enough to tally up the costs?
