teeth NEW
by: Vicky & Jonah

I brush Jonah's teeth + he get 1/3 beneful healthy smile. I rotate between bed & on & parsley. I get them at Safeway since they tend to run on sale often .
I also let him have dingo bones, the little ones & I will buy roundbones at Frys which they will cut up smaller for you. If u do give them the roundbones do not cook. Raw is fine. By cooking they can splinter which is not good for them.

I use a toothbrush which sits on my finger & I have a human baby fine one also. Depends on mood which one I use. You also can buy them almost anyplace.

If u need to order try Ryanspets.com & also Amazon for your best deal. I do believe brushing is best & all other just extra helpers.

U can visit utube for videos how to get started so they learn to like it & not fight you. Pedigree makes a dental stick also but even the little ones I would cut since to many treats take away from them not eating their food which is the most important.

Jonah weighs 20#'s but eats 1 cup of food mostly a day, a nightly cookie after bathroom before we settle in & like I said a smaller portion teeth treat.

Of course when it comes to baths or brush I will reward him also since he is such a good boy.

Keeping your coton's teeth in great shape NEW
by: Anonymous

Our coton is 14 1/2 years old this month. Since puppyhood I have taught him to let me brush his teeth every day. You must use doggy toothpaste (people toothpaste is not good for them). I use Petrodex Enzymatic Poultry Flavor toothpaste and extra soft human toothbrushes (I have 3 different sizes for different parts of his mouth). Please avoid peanut flavor toothpaste though, my dog has a ton of allergies and he kind of went into anaphylactic shock to some extent when I used the peanut flavored (it was scary, he could have died). Apparently, he is highly allergic to peanut anything. So I stick with poultry and the poultry flavored toothpaste has worked great for him for the whole 14 1/2 years! I buy the big tubes, 6.2 oz which I can only get from Amazon now. The PetSmarts and other dog stores if they carry it, only carry the smaller size which I go thru too quick since I brush his teeth once a day, every day.

I had a childhood dog and we never brushed his teeth; in his old age his teeth hurt and he did not want to eat because his teeth hurt. Since I was just a kid, I did not know that he needed his teeth taken care of and I felt bad for him. I decided now that I know they need their teeth cared for that I would be very diligent and intentional about making sure I try to brush my dogs teeth every day. It's work, but I am glad I do this, as he is old now and has all of his teeth and my vet says his teeth are in "stellar" condition. He has heart disease and can no longer go under anesthesia with dental cleanings and so my good brushing care has really made all the difference for him. I am very happy for him that way and he never has bad breath because I brush his teeth every day. Best wishes, I hope this helps.

warning about chewbones and treats NEW
by: Iris

I only by USA made and approved food and treats for my dog and still he got a bacterial infection from "bully sticks"AKA Bull Pizzel that he was really enjoying chewing on.Tuffy was first itching and gnawing at his leg and base of his tail he chewed to the skin inside his leg and tail, he got antihistamine treatment for that. The we went back to the vet for more tests and examination, he was having constant diarreah and vomitted. He is still on medication for two more weeks,, antibiotics for the bacteria and 2 forms of probiotics to balance his intestinal flora. Watch your dog carefully with any new food, see if his bowels movements get loose, and if he throws up or shows any other behavioral changes. Also be careful of any neighborhood lawn pesticide applications.

teeth and bones NEW
by: sherry cotton candie

I buy packaged bones for mine and they love them. They are a little bigger than what a round steak bone would be and are hickory smoked. They come in a package of 5.

Publix in FL carries them. One brand is called "Butcher Shoppe" and Merrick also makes something very similar. I have bought them for probably 2+ years and neither of my girls have had a problem with them.

That is their favorite thing now to chew and play with. After they get the goodie off them (be sure and give outside till then) they bring them in and will spend hours with them. Tossing them in the air and stealing each others. At any given time we probably have 10 or so in their toy box. I toss some out now and then.

They are made in the USA and have been inspected by the USDA so I feel safe giving them. They help in keeping teeth clean plus provide lots of fun for them.

Also "Greenies" are good to help with tarter and fresh breath. Be sure and get the teenie size and give only one a day.

Never give cooked bones but if you can get a big bone from the butcher they are usually safe for them to chew on with supervision. I have done that but they get to messy so I prefer the packaged ones.

Hope this helps. Good luck with yours.
