How do you keep your Coton de Tulear from being lonely?

by Gale

Having a dog is a big responsibility and small dogs like the Coton de tulear are very attuned to their humans and thrive on being close to us.

But we can't always be physically with our dogs all day. What have you done to keep your Coton from being lonely or bored?

Playmate

We just surprised my mother for mother's day with another Coton. Also, our other Coton doesn't seem as lonely any more. We always felt bad leaving her alone.

Lonely dog
by: Anonymous

I usually take my girl to the office where my boss owns her brother so they hang out all day. Days I have to leave her home, often my daughter will bring her dog over and the two of them play all day. Her dog is bigger and very energetic so it's quite a workout for my dog, who is exhausted when my daughter's dog leaves.

If all else fails, I leave the TV on a station such as HGTV where it's pleasant people voices all day (NOT Animal Planet with growling and barking animals) and leave her favorite kind of chewies out. It appears she sleeps most of the day.

She doesn't like being left at home but it doesn't seem to traumatize her. The only problem I have with it is that if she has been alone, not only is she clingy all evening but she is restless because she hasn't gotten her usual exercise. I try to take her for a long walk or play with her in the yard.

I'm fortunate I can take her to work most days.

No more guilt
by: Anonymous

I have to admit I did feel guilty for leaving my Coton home alone all day when the whole family was gone to work or school.

We finally put her in doggy daycare and she seems to love it - and I don't have to feel guilty anymore. The one we go to actually comes to the house and picks her up (our neighbors let them in) so she's only there 4 hours a day. They have a web cam so we get to see her any time we want which is great. It's nice to see her playing and having a great time.

I got her a brother! They play all day long when they're not sleeping! They also go to doggie daycare 2x/week to socialize with other dogs and run around! They LOVE it!
