How do you calm your Coton de Tulear at the Vet's office?

by Sylvie
(USA)

My 2 year old Coton de Tulear is so afraid every time I take her to the Veterinarian. She sometimes gets so anxious that she cannot be treated; her temperature soars and her heart races so much that the Vet is afraid to even give her yearly shots.

It breaks my heart to see her so scared. The Vet prescribed some doggy tranquilizer but that just made her tired in addition to being anxious.

She doesn't seem to be afraid of anything else - just the Vet's office. She's never really had any traumatic experiences there - she has to be treated periodically for ear infections, so I'm not sure why she's so scared.

Does anyone have any suggestions to help my terrified Coton?

Something beside

You might try putting her in a pet carrier. The enclosure may make her feel safer, then just keep the carrier on your lap. My dog shakes as well at the vet and always has, though she seems to take an interest in seeing the other animals there, but again, she's in her carrier. One other thing, when they call her name to go in, you might want to remove her from the carrier while you're still in the lobby. My dog wasn't about to get out of her carrier after she was in the exam room.

Smart Coton

Your Coton is beyond smart. Mine starts to shake when we are three blocks away. Just hang in there...they are fine on the way out. But, I have to say that our boy had recurrent ear infections and they completely subsided when we took him off all grains. He had an allergy, which is very common. He is now on chicken, veggies, salmon skin and eggs and he's doing great.

my coton doesn't care for it either and he's 6. you just have to hold them and talk to them. when i go into the room he hides underneath the chair - but he's fine once all is done and we leave.
