How do I get my Coton de Tulear to stop itching and having hot spots.

by Lynn
(St. Louis, Missouri)

I have tried sprays, gels, ointments, prescriptions, and have even cut his hair short, but the hot spots just don't go away. He is on a salmon/sweet potato diet for food and treats. Please help him. Thanks cuz I know he is miserable.

Hi Lynn

Unfortunately I can really relate to your frustration. Luc has had allergies since he was a little over 2 years old and we've been through every kind of treatment you can imagine. You can read my story and some solutions for dog skin allergies here.

Do you know the cause of your dog's itching and scratching? Is it all the time or just certain times of the year? I assume you've gone to the Vet to find out whether he's got food allergies or environmental allergies.

Dog food allergies are much easier to treat since the problem goes away once you find the food culprit causing the allergy.

Luc has environmental allergies so it's impossible to eliminate the cause. He just recently had a pretty severe flare-up (must be allergy season here in Florida) and he's doing well with Prednisolone (an anti-inflammatory drug) and weekly baths.

Even though he doesn't have food allergies we've also just started a new food that's supposed to be good for his skin and coat - Nutro Natural Choice for Sensitive Skin. Between the drugs and the baths he's had significant relief. It's too soon to tell with the new food.

If your dog is scratching enough to cause hot spots maybe you should put him in a head cone. Hot spots can become infected and cause even more problems. There's a natural remedy you can try on this page about hot spots.

I haven't tried it so you'll have to let us know if it helps.

I would definitely work with your Vet to find the best solution. Luc has been to a canine allergist and we've switched Vets twice to find someone who could help. I refused to believe there wasn't help for my little guy so I kept looking until I found someone who gave us hope and results.

Good luck - maybe we'll get some more suggestions from other itchy dog owners.
