How do I get my Coton de Tulear to be more relaxed and let me pick her up?

by Cel Otis
(Lancaster, NY)

Our Coton de Tulear, Calliope, was a year old Feb 7. We brought her home in mid Jan. She was shy the first couple of days but then became more comfortable.

She is always close by me but she will not come to me when I call her. She won't just come and jump up and sit by me. Now my husband she jumps on the couch and lays next to him. I think she is more bonded with me but I am jealous how she lays with my hubby. She sleeps in our bed every night and is adorable. She stays with me all day and then goes up with me at night.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried showing her a treat and then calling her to come? If she gets the treat when she comes, or when she jumps up to be with you and you praise her with "good girl" and lots of loving, soon she won't need the treat, but will look forward to the loving. Hopefully.
