Why would you WANT to teach your dog to bark and disturb the neighbors? My Coton never barks and it's wonderful

Be careful what you ask for... NEW
by: Wendy (& Leila)

The barking at the mail arriving, or someone knocking at the door, or a truck going past the house -- can get out of control here. We didn't have to do anything to teach Leila to bark; it's just part of her personality and maybe some anxiety on her part.

When we're playing with Leila we do the low growl, though, and it does elicit a response. When we toss things for her to fetch she also barks excitedly. Maybe you just have to do more of that kind of interacting.

Enjoy your pup!

She is barking when we are playing, and sometimes when somebody is on the door. But only sometimes, and I want it to be more often. I will try to bark myself when someone comes at the door. Thanks for help.

Odd

This breed is known for their barking. For Moriarty, he barks when he hears someone at the door, or they knock or ring the doorbell. But to get him to bark was pretty easy when we play. He would grab his toy and I would look right into his eyes and make a low growling sound, he picked up on that instantly.

Now whenever I want him to bark (usually only when we play or he hears someone) I just look at him and give a low growl and he does the same thing, only his is more a growl that turns into a bark.

But training a dog to just bark, I would think you need a trigger. For example, if someone comes to the door and knocks. Then look at your dog and make a barking noise. Coton's are smart, he should pick it up fast, unless he is just a mellow dog that doesn't want to bark or has something wrong with his vocal cords?
