How can I stop my dog barking at people?

by Emily

My Coton de Tulear is perfect in every way except when it comes to barking. Missy is 11 months old and she just won't stop barking when she's around people other than close family. This is causing some stress and embarrassment. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

just to add one more thing on whistle training. it can be done in your house say upstairs downstairs etc. i look at it as a 2nd measure to come. i still practice come where he sits & stays in front of me & i touch him in case i need to grab ahold of him for something going forward thats why the touch but the whisle can make it a game for both

try whistle training for them to come when outside barking, you can get a bag of cheap whistles at party city & start by blowing & treating then blowing & having them chase you to come & treat. treats do not have to be large little pieces go a long way. one thing nice about this is whistle sounds mean, come now & they don't ignore your voice which doesn,t mean they do, but the sound sends the focus to you. they come back into the house to break thier focus away from whatever their barking at & treat. jonah does the same thing & since he likes his leash from our walks after i say thank you, quiet if he does not stop i go out put his leash on say lets go & bring him in the house. he is starting to get quiet means quiet not perfect but much better.

Help
by: Helen

My 11 month old Coton barks at everyone who passes by. He gets along very well with my other dog, but does not play nice with others, he barks and there is not stoping him, I have to lift him up or he tries to snap at the other dogs.

I bought a sonic bark collar and it does not help.
I tried distracting him, no good. I tried pennies in a can, he stops for a minute and then goes nuts with barking again. I have tried spraying him with water, but I can not always be outside in the yard when he is out playing with his brother ( who by the way, never barks and loves everyone)
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

barking/talking
by: Anonymous

my coton also loves to get his 2 cents in when one of us come home & we start to talk to each other(like its his turn). even though its hard to ignore them since it is funny, we turn our backs to him and fold our arms & ignore him(he is 1.5 yrs old) it works 3 out of 4 times(almost there). when out walking it has been a challange since he likes to voice his opinion & since he is not food motivated at this time i'm still working on this one. i seem to find if i greet the people(ex. say hello) he stops. with other dogs he is not agressive but when we start to walk away after they sniff each other he barks like hes telling them something.

Excessive barking issue
by: Gale

I think it's pretty common for the Coton de Tulear to be protective and want to guard their home. When the barking becomes excessive it's time to step in...

One of the best things you can do for your dog is to make sure she’s socialized. At a very early age she should be exposed to all kinds of people, places and things so she becomes accustomed to as many different situations as possible.

Try some kind of distraction while your dog is barking. I have used some noisy chains sewn inside fabric that makes a lot of noise when I rattle it. I shake that and give the “enough” command. Works every time.

Thanks and good luck
