How can I get my Coton de Tulear to sleep through the night?

by Sandra

I have an 11 month old male Coton who is a lot of fun. He wants to play with every dog and person he meets.

My problem is night time. He sleeps is his crate beside our bed and most nights wakes up whining in the middle of the night. I just shush him and let him lick my hand and he usually settles. How do i get him to sleep without waking me up? Is there a good age not to crate during the day when I go out?

Sleepless Also
by: Anonymous

My Coton is 11 months old and has rarely if ever slept through the night. I tried to crate train (in my bedroom) when he was young but because of his restlessness thought the crate was too small (even though it was the largest one the store sells). I switched to a dog bed in my bedroom and closed my door but still he was restless. I would exercise him before bed time, play with him but not in such a way to get him all revved up, and would take him out for a pee/poo before bedtime and would not acknowledge his whines but still he would NOT sleep through the night. His restlessness would wake me up. So I gave up and put him on my bed but the dog will still NOT sleep through the night. I'm at a loss and hoping he will grow out of it. However I'm not overly optimistic and have accepted this is just the way it is. If any other suggestions other than my dog sleeps through the night would be very much appreciated.

Spanky
by: dee

We are very lucky with our 14 week old Spanky. He has yet to wake us up in the middle of the night and we are hoping that doesn't change. We make sure to take him out for wee wee for the last time at 11pm. He's usually very tired by then but we hug and kiss him for about 15 min, then say Night Night and he knows its bed time. He is in our LR and we are in the BR. He usually doesn't start to whine until around 5:30am. On occasion I have heard him whine earlier (anywhere between 2-4am) but its only a little and we never acknowledge it. (as Ceaser Milan would say, no touch, no talk, no eye contact - and so far it has worked for us). Also, we never ever take him out when he is barking, whining or too excited at any time. We make sure he is quieted and calm before we let him out. He's been sleeping though the night since we brought him home and we hope it stays like that when he gets older. He's such a good boy!

SLEEPING

We do not want him sleeping on the bed with us so I was wondering if perhaps we don't crate him but just let him sleep on the floor and have the freedom to move around if he would sleep better.

sleep time
by: Iris Miller

I always take Tuffy out to pee (and sometimes poops too) just before I go to bed, no matter how late, because he always manages to hold back some. Then I know he will be comfortable and be able to sleep all night. Tuffy always has to have some rough housing and play just before he settles down to sleep on my bed at my feet. It must be a way to release pent up energy. When he is feeling insecure because I went out without him, he sleeps closer to me, *to make sure I don't get away from him). I leave his soft crate open in the family room, it is his cave. I tried crating him early, it was not an option for either of us.

Sleepless
by: Sherry

I have an 11 month old female. She has slept in her crate every night in the family room. She was 12 weeks old when we got her. She does have two poodle companions, but they each sleep in their own crate. She cried or barked every night for weeks. It was so bad, I even considered selling her. The poodles never let out a peep. Cindy woke me up every night over and over. I was exhausted. It was almost as bad as having a collicky newborn baby. I would let her out at least once each night. just as soon as I got back to bed and almost asleep she would start barking again. I brought her into the bedroom and this just made it worse. My huband will not allow dogs in our bed. :o(

Finally, in puppy class I was told she would keep waking me as long as I kept getting up and letting her out or quit paying attention to her barking. So I quit getting up in the middle of the night and after about a week... I got to sleep through the night! She is quiet at night now, but barks as soon as she hears someone stirring. So, when one person gets up in the morning, the others follow!

Maybe this is what you need to do. Unless you think something is wrong with your Coton when he wakes you at night, just ignore him. After about a week, more or less, he should stop waking you. I hope this helps.

I'm so glad I toughed it out for that week or so. I did not want to give her up. Good luck with your little one!

not a problem here either
by: kathyswims

My Coton is now 5 1/2 years old and has never had the problem of not sleeping. She does start the night under my bed then later gets up on the bed after I settle down more. She moves around some but settles right back down.

My other dog has issues with sleeplessness though. She is very old (16 years). So what I've done is once we go to bed, I close the door to my room. She settles down and sleeps. Keep the room a comfy temp for her.
