by Cindy
(Canada)

My Coton de Tulear puppy at nine months old has just been diagnosed and will need surgery or may have to be put down eventually. Can anyone help?!

Be Patient
by: Lynda Owen

I agree with Iris, without all specific information, I don't know that telling you that your dog would have to be "put Down" eventually was very comforting. These wonderful bundles of joy LOVE their play, and they play hard sometimes. All coton owners know of "THE ZOOMIES" and its one of the things i love most about Tassie. But, like all things, you just have to monitor and accidents will happen. Dogs in general have a very high tolerance to pain, and i have to believe there is "sounder" medical advise out there for you. This being my first small dog, I have also learned that we have to find a happy medium to their climbing stairs, jumping on sofas, etc, as over time these thing commonly lead to back problems. Good LUck, and keep us all posted,
Regards,
Lynda

Coton weak knees no reason for euthanasia
by: Iris Miller

I posted a similar question about Tuffy's knees a long time ago.Like all Cotons, Tuffy loves speed running turning on a dime and jumping on and off the furniture. Sometimes he would tweak his right knee and screech. Then he'd lie down and wait for the spasm to go away. I was told by the Vet and also my family doctors, the big mistake we are all making doing research on the internet and self diagnosing.I did the same thing, took my dog to the Vet because I thought he had Luxating Patellas, After careful examination he showed me how he could easily pop Tuffy's knee in and out, he said it is like some people we cll "double jointed: loose ligaments. Unfortunately, his limping and pain were diagnosed with blood tests as Lyme Disease caused by a tick. So, dear friends, be careful searching for diseases for yourself and your pets, leave it to the Professionals. Yes, the Coton is known as a breed to have weak knees, so try to give your dog a boost up, a little bench or ladder for them to use. I was very disturbed about the question of whether to "put the dog DOWN", because of knee pain. It disturbed me so much, I am very sad. My question is, Would you want to be euthanized for a little arthritis in your joints? All mammals and living things have their weaknesses. Even with pain your dog is loyal to you,and will bear the pain to go for a good walk with you. That will help your Coton stay fit, not fat, and feel better all around. The walking will strengthen their knees. The love and bond will strengthen too. with love, Iris and Tuffy

dysplasia
by: Laura

is dysplasia the same as luxating patella? My coton had that at 6 mo and we had her spade as I was told it was heriditary. Never had another problem. My other coton jumped off of my friend's lap, not unusual at all, and hurt her back leg, turned out she chipped the bone and ripped 3 of the 4 ligaments, she is 8 yrs old. Doc told us to put her on a diet as she was too fat, and maybe we won't have to have surgery. she is losing weight and seems to be better. Is this her back leg? get another opinion, do not put her down. Please let me know.
