I have come across some sites that say the wonderful and beautiful Coton de Telear breed is near extinction. Is this true?

Coton rare & breed in danger NEW
by: Truffles mom

I knew that the Coton was not as popular in the US but I did not know that it was rare or in danger of being extinct. My boy has all of his tools and they are working, I have not offered or look into studding him out yet though. He is just over 2 now.

He recently had a bunch of blood work done and he is perfect. If someone can verify that the breed is in danger I guess I would put us out there for studding in Florida. I certainly don't want to ever see this breed in danger or extinction & I guess a little junior or juniorette wouldn't be so bad to have around!

I would sure hope not! Cannot imagine that happening although I have heard breeders select only the best puppies to be deemed breedable. That was the case when I got mine........We had to agree to have her neutered......That is the best way to keep the breed at its best as far as the standards go. I understand that.

They are rare in the sense most people have not heard of them but if you look on the web there are alot of breeders......Such happy perfect little creatures I would not think they will ever disappear.

Not sure about that. I had a groomer who told me there were only about 5,000 cottons. I also heard that they are starting to breed more of them. I do know that they are rare ...
