Zuni gets ear infections every month. Any suggestions? He is three years old. I don't want to keep medicating him. Vet says it is yeast.

yeast infections in the ears
by: Anonymous

Well, our cotton was getting yeast infections in the ears I found out because I was feeding him peas and cheese, both which are foods that have yeast. Once I took out the peas and cheese from his diet, the ear infections went away.

During that time, I used this excellent ear cleanser for dogs, it's called Zymox Ear Cleanser. It has bioactive enzymes and gently cleans dirty ears and inhibits bacterial growth. It was a God-send to me. I really like it because it is natural and works really good. Also, I was giving him antibiotics but the infections kept coming back and I did not want to continue to keep giving him antibiotics month after month.

But after I stopped giving him peas, the infections went away. You can easily research foods that have yeast in them on the internet. If your dog has yeast infections, you probably want to take out any foods that have yeast in them. Anyway, it worked for us. Best wishes.

Ear Infections
by: Vicky & Jonah

My Silky Terrier Samantha was prone to ear infections even though her ears stood straight. Usually once they get them they follow them through life. As u use the medication it will go away that they no longer have that smell & then for no reason (Such as moisture getting in their ears) it's back.

I cannot remember the medicine but instead of getting the spray bottle size the vet would write a prescription for the bigger size @ the same price to get filled but without spray.

I then used the old fashion glass eye dropper u can still pick up at a pharmacy & when you get that smell coming from the ear medicate.

Usually the vet will help u go the most economical way. The signs r usually they start to itch or I use to just take a smell as they lie besides u since the sooner u catch the beginning the easiest on u & your pet.

Most of the time depending on what type of yeast infection once they get it it's there for life off & on.

Most of the time once diagnosed the vet will just refill med no office charge or go through ped med or check out Walmart or Frys for price since they carry certain ped med.

Good Luck

ear infections

I agree with the previous comment. We were told that if she ate things that were bad for her she could get ear infections. My coton is almost 4 y.o and only had 1 infection so far.

The breeder also told me to be very careful when bathing her. If water goes inside their ear canal it wont dry very good with those floppy ears. whenever i bath her i make sure to put cotton balls so the water doesnt go in too far and i try and make sure to dry her ears good..i also use a solution in them that helps the drying (got that from a groomer). I know for our dog the ear infection was due to bathing and not caring for her ear properly the first time. never had a problem after that.

hope this helps

Change His Diet?
by: Diane

Hi,

Have you considered the cause may be diet? I'm not much of an expert but one trainer I've used for my little Coton, Teenie suggested the wrong diet can cause many problems, among them the streaking of their eyes. If I recall it was too many carbs or gluten. She was a proponent of very organic raw food.

I offer this as a suggestion to perhaps research this angle as I'm not an expert. Hope this helps.
