What kind of dirt are you using to plant?
by: Anonymous

our dog used to go crazy when we supplemented our soil with bone meal. Often the smellier the dirt, the more they like!

Our Coton likes to eat the decorative gravel we have in our garden beds. She thinks it's so fun when we try to get the stones out of her mouth! We now have a barrier around all our beds.

we have changed food a couple of times, and buy real high quality but she still prefers branches

Dirt Diet

Puppies do eat the darndest things, but the good news is that most of them grow out of it.

The list of crazy (and potentially dangerous) things Luc ate as a puppy is too long to list. Fortunately, I learned how to keep him from anything that was a potential hazard and he grew out of it - thankfully.

You definitely want to monitor her when she's outside so she can't get into trouble. The best thing you can do is keep her away from the soil and provide a replacement or distraction when she's outside.

And yes, as Deborah mentioned, some think that dogs who eat dirt (or other gross things) do so because they're lacking nutrients in their food - so just make sure she's getting a high quality dog food.

Good Luck!

Pup eating garden....
by: Deborah

I would be more concerned about him eating something that could make him quite ill, or worse!! If he is eating, I mean EATING, the soil and flowers you may wish to revisit his food...as he may be missing some vital/essential nutrients/vitamins etc....Good luck...

Our Rudy seems to like to play in the freshly cultivated flower beds too....not sure if he's eating the soil....it looks like it, cause his nice, clean, white face sure gets nasty.....WHY?
