Dog is afraid of cars

by Fran

Ever since my dog was a puppy he's been terribly afraid of riding in the car. He'll just cry and cry as if he's in such misery and it just breaks my heart. My Vet says I should give him an anti-anxiety drug but I would like to find a way to help him without resorting to drugs.

I would appreciate any advice.

Make the car a positive experience
by: Anonymous

I had the same problem with my dog and it was pretty easy to resolve - just lots of time and patience. Every night I'd bring her into the car with one of her toys or a treat. We'd just sit in the car and play without going anywhere. After she felt safe and calm I started driving around the block and when she felt good with that we'd take longer drives. Now I have to spell R-I-D-E because she gets so excited and happy when we go for a ride. Hope this helps you and your dog.
