To all you Coton owners, what do you feed your pet and why? (Currently I feed Spanky Blue Buffalo but have heard some recent complaints that I am thinking of changing brands.) Comment here to tell me! Thank you!

Ruthie gets gourmet dog food
by: Mrs. C.

I make my Ruthie Rue's dog food for the most part. When I make a batch I basically put 1/3 high protein meat, 1/3 cooked white rice, 1/3 hard boiled eggs shells and all for the calcium. I then add a vegetable to the mix, either a quart of green beans, sweet potato, or squash. I cook the meat first and then run it, the hard boiled eggs and vegetables through the food processor and then stir in the cooked white rice. I don't use salt, but I do add dried parsley about 1 1/2 Tablespoons. I then put it into containers and keep about 3-4 days worth in the fridge and freeze the rest either in individual portion size containers or what ever I have available at the time. I then rotate the meat in the next batch. I like to buy chicken thighs on sale and stock up to help keep the cost down. We normally have our own beef. I have even used venison as well. I do add a kelp supplement right before I serve it to her and add a little water to make a little gravy. My Vet says she is very healthy. Because this food is not full of fillers her poop is small and compact and never stinks. On rare occasions I will feed her some dry kibble, but not very often and when I do her po po smells horrible even though the dry kibble is one of the best "Life's Abundance" that I buy on line. I started feeding Life's Abundance to my cats after a cat breeder recommended it to me. For my cats I feed canned and dry kibble. They love it and very rarely ever throw up which is good because I have four. Ruthie Rue is the only one I make food for, but I cook everything because I'm afraid of E-coli and other food borne illnesses. I get great pleasure in making her food. It one way that I can know exactly what she is getting which is why I do it.

Raw dog food diet
by: Anonymous

You may want to take a look at Primal Formula which is a raw food diet. I called the company and asked them how food is inspected. When food comes in it is tested during inspection to make sure everything is OK before it is sent out. Food is somewhat pricey, ingredients are organic and I noticed that the dog no longer has runny eyes. According to food advisor this is rated as a 5 star food. This food is as close to what they would eat in the wild. I am currently giving my coton venison. Each little nugget is 48 calories.

Spanky
by: Anonymous

Spanky is a little doll! We started Bill on Taste of the Wild as soon as we got him as it could be fed to puppies too. He only likes the Fowl flavor.
He is one with a very sensitive tummy. We spend $300 on an ER vet bill because of a milk bone! Oddly enough he can eat a Biscuit called Nun-Better. They are small and he gets one a day. He went to obedience training and the instructor introduced us to dehydrated sweet potatoes. She makes them herself with the skin on, sliced about 1/4 inch thick. We keep them in the freezer as they have no preservatives.

I just got a 1.5 male coton who has been raised on Fromm. He basically inhales it - never misses a piece! He eats 1/4 cup 2x per day. He is lean - the vet loves that! - and he walks 2 - 4 miles 4 times per week. On long walk days he gets a bit more food :)

What we feed Toby
by: Kathy

With the recent plethora of dog food and treat recalls, we're much more diligent about reading labels these days. If it says "made in China" (or doesn't specify it's point of origin), it doesn't come into the house.

Toby's diet (for the most part) consists of chicken, hard-boiled eggs and Blue Buffalo dry dog food. Popcorn is his favorite treat! :D

Dog food made in USA
by: Lana

Dog food made in USA is our choice these days. My dogs love Castor and Pollux Natural Ultramix Adult Dog Food. It’s has outstanding digestibility and taste, it has balanced amount of omega 6 and 3 fatty acids, helps to keep Coton coat healthy and radiant.
Read about this food, it has top ratings & best reviews from dog owners. Available in Original, Salmon and Lamb and Rice flavors.
My dogs love it, especially - Ultramix Grain Free/Poultry Free Adult Dry Dog Salmon.

I mix a scoop of ZiwiPeak canned dog food with dry food of the day, my dogs love Lamb/Venison Cuisine. It is a natural balanced diet with added vitamins and minerals. Great taste – happy dogs!

Also we like Healthy Adult DogInnova Food, I like to mix it with fresh carrots & ZiwiPeak Real Meat Grain Free Air Dried Raw Dog to provide the optimal levels of nutrients for the day.

For better digestion I give my dogs 1-2 tsp of pure pumpkin with every meal. They love it, & it helps to keep them happy at all time.
Check it out - Nummy Tum Tum Pure Pumpkin For Pets. Always availabel on Amazon.com

Dog Food
by: sherry cotton candie

As I have posted many times, my girl Cotton is just the very pickiest eater I have ever seen. I had tried all the top rated dry foods and several of the cn'd (most of which made her vomit).

I am now feeding her the tubed freshpet chicken, vegetable and rice formula which she loves. Candie does also although she is not as picky. i can buy it at my vets so it is easy to get. She only likes it maybe two days in a row-then I cook her chicken or grd beef w/rice. Feed this a day or two and go back to the fresh select. I buy the 1lb size so between the two dogs it works out well before it will spoil.

I also take an eggshell-cook it in the microwave for 45 seconds-crush it in my garlic press and add about 1/4 tsp. to their chicken before giving it to them. I do worry about them getting enough calcium when eating our food.

They eat about a tablespoon of plain yogurt with us sometimes in the am. I feed them between 8-9 in the am and 5-6 pm. If they refuse their bfst I have started putting it back in the fridge as it will spoil sitting out. I keep their blue dry food out in a bowl but they rarely touch it. I have thrown or given away so much dry food when this is gone I will no longer even buy it.

They love raw carrots, green beans, lettuce, blueberries, peeled apples, peaches and cotton helps me eat my vinegar/salt potato chips. Not good for her but who can resist her little begging face?

I get all the recall notices and only buy them dognation chicken or beef treats. Never jerky as it has been recalled so many times. Watch this treat though as only one should be fed a day per 10lbs body weight. I break them up and feed small pieces at a time so they think they are getting alot.

One thing I have noticed since feeding freshpet is Candie's stools are perfect now. She used to have lots of mucus and huge stools. They are now smaller and look normal. I love this food but it does require refrigeration.

Sorry this is so long, I had just been searching for two years for a dog food Cotton would like, this has just made me happy to find it.

Spanky you are so cute. Hope mommy finds a good food you like.

I have always fed our 3 yr old coton Castor & Pollux Ultramix dry food. I purchase this online from PetCo, but PetFlow also carries it online. He also gets 4 little squares of 4Health (from Tractor Supply) canned chicken stew. He loves this combination and is very healthy. Both of these foods are made in the USA. Castor & Pollux has chicken as first ingredient and contains NO wheat, soy or corn.

Castor & Pollux also carries some peanut butter cookie treats that he LOVES!

what I feed my dog
by: Iris Miller

Tuffy's main food is IAMS Mimi Chunks Proactive Health. He usually waits to eat it at night. In The morning I put a 1/4" sliced of Natural Balance Lamb roll, chopped up on top of his dry food. During the day he gets Pure Bites beef liver treats in his Kong toy, and I just started giving him Merrick Training beef bits for something to crunch on. I stopped giving him bully sticks and treats like that because he nearly choked to death on a piece that stabbed his pallet and got stuck in his mouth between his teeth locking his jaw, it was very traumatic for him and me, I could not get him to stand still to help him,I could not reach into his mouth, he was frantic, and finally pawed it out himself. His mouth and paws were bloody. I watch him carefully and have taught him to chew his treats by saying "bite it" and holding the treat in my fingers, so he nibbles at it. (not swallow it whole). As I;ve posted before, Tuffy also gets some table food, he love broiled salmon, cooked chicken and baked sweet potatoes, but he will not eat any dog food with those ingredients, he demands fresh food. LOLTrue!

Consumer Affiars had the complaints and they were all recent with similar issues: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/blue_buffalo.html

Before I saw this, i heard about issues which triggered me to research it. I tried to contact BB to see what htey had to say but to no avail. I confirmed with my vet that she has seen recent issues with GI with dogs on BB. That was all i needed to change it.

Im trying out Natural Instincts Grain Free which has similar ingredients to the Fromm line. (Fromm is not that iasty to come by in our neck of the woods and I dont want to have to rely on online ordering solely.)... Thanks everyone for your input. Its greately appreciated. Dog Food

I currently cook him meat and mix it with dry kibble (currently I use Fromm).. Unfortunately, 75% of the time, he eats around the kibble. He's very picky. The only thing he absolutely LOVES to eat, are raw marrow bones. I tried to switch him to a raw diet, but the marrow bones are the only thing he seems to like raw. I'd have him completely on dry kibble if I could, but I've yet to find one he'll eat alone. I think he just likes to hold out for something better.. and he knows I'll give in before he does. Spoiled boy! :) If your dog eats his kibble, I'd say stick with it.. The problem is, a lot of the big brands have the same manufacturer.. That's why when there's a recall, the list is usually a mile long. That's probably what the complaints are about.

Dog food concern
by: Anonymous

I feed my dog Blue Wilderness (which is from Blue Buffalo), and she does absolutely fabulously with it. I did a quick search on Blue Buffalo complaints after your post and found a website where others complained about it. It received a low rating on this site from the complainers. But you have to take this with a grain of salt. Anyone who goes to a complaint website is not going to be giving high ratings. In fact, every single product rated on that site had a low rating.

I suggest that if your dog is doing well with the food you are currently providing, stick with it. If his "bathroom output" is good, then it isn't causing intestinal distress.
