Dog barking deterrent

Will a dog barking deterrent work? I have a 16 month old Coton de Tulear who barks when anyone comes near the house. He barks like crazy and takes a long time to calm down so I was wondering if any of these dog barking deterrent products actually work.

Thanks so much for creating this site about this amazing dog. Luc is adorable!

Here are some good books: Control Unleashed, Feisty Fido, Click to Calm, Scaredy Dog, Chill Out, Fido and all of Patricia McConnell's books. Try Tellington Touch. Train base behaviors carefully: calm control and trust are essential.Find a good trainer who works with clicker training and specializes in highly reactive dogs, which cotons can be. They are short, face it. Harsher methods (and I am VERY suspicious of Bark Busters, but it depends on the trainer) may have a good short term effect, but break your dog's spirit. Keep your coton out of overstimulating places (e.g. pet stores) and do everything to teach it to relax. Google "Protocol for Relaxation," by Karen Overall. These are all evidence-based, gentle interventions. Takes a lot of patience and time if your dog has got the barking habit.

I have a one year old coton that barks if anyone or anything comes near me or the house. None of these deterrents work, I have purchased them all. My coton is starting Bark Buster classes, I will let you know how that goes.

I've heard that many people have had success with some of the dog barking deterrent products available such as ultrasonic devices, anti-bark collars, anti-anxiety medications, citronella misters that spray when a dog barks and a myriad of other products designed to quiet your dog.

I haven't used any of these products myself and would just caution to just make sure you don’t use any product that could harm your dog in any way.

I too would love to hear from anyone who has had success with these dog barking deterrents.
