Dog anxiety question

by John K.
(Elk Grove Ca.)

Our 5 year old dog becomes very anxious if my wife coughs. She goes outside to the farthest spot from the house and will sit or bark. It's difficult to get her to come in. If I or anyone else coughs there is no reaction at all. Any clue?

dog angst Q.
by: Deborah

The questions below are good? And, I would add is she closest to your wife? I daresay you might consider not allowing the dog to go outside, but rather; calmly allow the dog to be w/you while your wife "coughs" and then allow your wife to attempt comfort and reassuring. It would seem to me that your dog is frightened by the coughing and as the question below relates may have had a bad experience w/"cougher" if a rescued Coton.

see a doctor
by: Anonymous

If your dog just started this behavior then I think your wife should see a doctor for her coughing and insist on a complete work-up.
