Does my scratching dog have allergies?

My dog seems to scratch behind his ears alot and rolls around on the floor rubbing his face into the carpet. The vet said a while ago he may have allergies and to give him childrens benadryl. I gave it to him a few times but did not like the idea of giving him meds when I wasn't convinced it helped him. Are these normal behaviours or should I be treating him for allergies? Does anyone else have these concerns?

ear itch + heavily breathing attack
by: steph

My little duchess also has a similar problem. She scratches and scratches her ears, I told the vet about it and she said something about the hair in her ear might make her itch her. So I plucked her hair with tweezers out. (She actually didn’t seem to dislike it ) but she still itches.

Another thing that duchess does that I would love if you guys told me if your coton does, is mostly after drinking water (sometimes just hanging out ) she has like a little weird cough/choking/ sounds like if she was congested attack. Where she is breathing heavily trying to catch her breath but it really just weird. (hard to describe, kind of like if you had a cold and were only trying to breath down your nose, but she is breathing with all her might ) Well I asked the vet about it and she said its allergies. And that if she starts to do it more than once a day to tell her about it. Each episode lasts about a few seconds. I always get scared because it sounds like she is drowning. She does it also when we are sleeping I hear her, get up make sure she is okay and go back to sleep.

Allergies
by: Gale

Unfortunately, this is a problem I wish I didn't know so much about. Luc has allergies and it's been quite an adventure trying to find solutions. What works for one dog may not work for others so you have to do some experimenting.

Try to find out if your dog has fool allergies. first, because that is definitely the easiest to treat (once you figure out which food is causing it).

It can be allergies............could also be food allergies. Benadril will not hurt him.
