Cotons at the beach

by Tara
(US)

I was wondering if anyone has experienced the Coton de Tulear with long AND puppy cut hair on the beach and what to do after they run on the beach?

I am getting my first Coton and I go to the beach a lot. I need to know how to care for her.

Cowboy Magic Detangler & Shine
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

This is a concentrate with a silk protein. Rub a little into coat before swimming & it prevents mats & damange of the coat. Use after bath for comb out. I purchased a 16oz bot. 4 yrs. ago & still have 1/3 left. Also the Johnsons baby detangler mentioned works great on puppy coats.

Since Az. hit 100 this week I will taking my own advice & cutting Jonah down this yr since we have not had a really hot summer in 3 yrs & are due.

The best thing for mats is a good pair of thinning scissors. Cut on the mat 2-3 times & use ur tight pin brush & their out. This will not leave the hole look on the coat like a reg. pr. of scissors. Also easier on ur pup. Works great behind the ears, neck, butt & leg areas where they accumulate. Less chance to cut ur pet by accident.

Since ur by the ocean if ur pup becomes a surfer do please send pictures.

Beach wear
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

To make it easier on u & ur Coton while u spend time at the beach keep a puppy cut. Jonah luvs the water & in the summer time he gets wet alot.

Here u do not even need a towell he shakes & the heat starts to dry. Carry a wide tooth dog comb & while wet comb him out. If u do this regularity it will take 5-10 min max.

Also after bath older info on Coton grooming calls for u to comb while wet then blow dry & comb again if needed. It really is 10 times easier to comb a Coton while wet. Enjoy the beach

Beach Babes
by: Rona (NJ)

We live at the beach so Barney, our 15-month old Coton spends quite a lot of time running on the beach. We keep him in a puppy cut that is on the longer side. He is not too fond of the water but will bark and chase the surf. We also have a salt water pool where he can cool off - but usually not willingly! After a romp on the beach, I use a towel to dry his hair and then just brush him lightly to remove any excess sand. After a dip in the pool, we gently pat him dry and let him air dry. Once he is dry we will brush/comb to make sure there are no tangles or mats We haven't had to bathe him after his romps or swims, but I do brush him regularly. He is also groomed every 4-5 weeks to keep his hair in check.
Barney & I wish you only good times with your Coton!

Question about the conditioner

What conditioner do you use that you rinse out ... before you use the leave-in conditioner?

Same as always
by: Mitchell Tuckness

If it has a puppy cut, then you probably just need to give it a bath to get the salt / sand out of the hair and off the skin.

If it has long hair then its the same, but with a lot of brushing after you bath it and use conditioner to help brush out the tangles in the hair. Bath, shampoo, condition, rinse, put on leave on conditioner and brush.

OMG...I was wondering the SAME THING!
by: Kathy Kilcoyne

My "Toby" doesn't like getting wet (thank God); but I'm contemplating a 'beach house' in the future. I'm originally from New England and KNOW what salt water does to my own hair. Wondering how Toby would fare. I'll keep tabs on the comments.

Wish my comment could have been "helpful" rather than "need the same info"!

:-)
