Coton de Tulear, Charlie

by Patrick
(Indian Wells, CA, USA)

We have two dogs, Charlie (Coton de Tulear) and Coco (Bichon) that are best friends. Charlie is very intelligent and likes to watch television, especially when he sees a commercial involving dogs which causes him to try to look inside or on top of the TV.

He is a terrific jumper and can leap vertically 4 ft., which does not amuse my wife if that happens to be the kitchen counter. Charlie is very affectionate and always follows me around because he wants to know what's going on in the house.

What a handsome boy. I use a round shaped leather collar made by Circle T (Costal Pet Products Alliance, OH.) They are mat free. I used them on my Silky's also. Most pet stores make them under their label.

They are simple but they really work. I too am stumped on a good harness that does not mat Jonah's hair where they touch. I am open to any suggestions.

How I introduced him to the water
by: Sherry

He loved to be where ever I was...so I was always in the pool and he really couldn't tell the depth of it when he first started and he was only a puppy...so what I did was put him on the raft...and he would get bored and jump in the water to swim back to the ladder...then whenever I went under water he would jump in (to rescue me...lol)and he would be standing on my back as I surfaced. Another thing is praise...every time he went in the water I praised him so much,,,,still do and he swims like a little fish...he will even put his head under the water to catch bugs!

Lilly Belle

by Christine
(Kansas)

Lilly Belle is a very alert, playful 9 month old Coton de Tulear. She is an absolute delight for our family. She is everything the breeder described and more so. She loves people, especially children. Her main hobby outdoors is looking upward to the top of trees and bushes, to watch for birds in flight.

Her sensitivity to mood changes in the family is acute and quite marvelous to observe. Can you tell that we adore her?

Theodore Roosevelt AKA Teddy (Coton de Tulear)

by Samantha
(Dallas, TX)

Sleepy Teddy

Sleepy Teddy

Everyone who meets Theodore Roosevelt a.k.a. Teddy says he is the HAPPIEST dog they have ever seen. I know this is a Coton trait, but most people have never met a Coton so they are truly amazed by his disposition.

When I first got Teddy I had just moved to a new city after school and was lonely. He truly lives up to the namesake "anti-depressant." I never feel alone with him, and he never fails to make me smile. Right now I am in an apartment, but when I save up for a house with a yard I can't wait to get Teddy a Coton brother or sister.

Zero, one of the loves of my life!

by Leslie Redman
(San Tan Valley, AZ, USA)

Que??

Que??

I am the mom of two teacup Chihuahuas and a gorgeous Coton de Tulear named Zero. I was sold on Chihuahuas, but one day, I saw Zero in a pet store window. I know, pet stores are awful, but he was actually marked down a lot because he was getting older. He was born in June 2008, and it was October 2008! I don't know what it was, I had to take him home!

He immediately became one of my babies! He's the sweetest, funniest, most personable little dogs I've ever seen. He and my Chihuahuas are my heart.

I think the Coton de Tulear is the best breed because they're such fun dogs to be with. Like my dog Lulu, whenever I'm crying or am upset she'll run right next to me and snuggle! She really makes me happy! That's why I'm getting another one! Her name is gonna be Krista and she's all white. The cool thing is is that they're sisters! Lulu and I can't wait ! :) <3

GUS the wonder dog

by judi
(draper,ut)

my new puppy, little black and white coton is so cute and lovable i just love him. i first heard of this breed on internet, while searching for a small dog that would be a good companion, but be happy in small space. we recently moved from large home and yard to small condo, smaller yard. i was looking at silky terriers or west highland terriers, but just couldn't quit thinking about these darling dogs. not only were they hard to find but too expensive. everytime i felt kind of lonely or down, i would get on computer and look at these cute little dogs. and start plotting how to get one, must have looked at them nearly 2 yrs. then found some in morgan,ut and also twin falls,id. had my heart set on black and white and quess what? i found GUS, he is special and a wonder dog because he lights up our lives and makes me smile and my husband laugh every time we see him. i should have named him BONUS, because he absolutely is a bonus to us in our 'golden years'

Indiana Jones has the most playful personality. He lets us know when he is hungry, thirsty, and wants to play. He knows where his treats/bones are and he barks at the drawer when he wants one. He is so precious to us.

Coton de Tulear holds the record for fastest learner

by Kim

Hi, I just adopted a 4-month old Coton a few weeks ago and have to say I am amazed. She is incredibly sweet, quickly bonded with my Yorkie, and learning potty training at a rate faster than I've seen. I've potty trained Maltese, Yorkies, and Poodles, but my sweet Coton friend holds the record for fastest learner!

I'm a forever Coton lover.

Our little Coton de Tulear, Polly...

by Cary Burns-Smith
(Chicago, IL)

Our Coton de Tulear, Polly, joined our family when she was 9 weeks old. She is very sweet, smart and loving. Although it's second nature to her, most people find it surprising that she is litter-trained. (I wanted to minimize dirty paws from the outside.) She prefers to do her "other" business however, outside.

Once she is let back into the house, she immediately sits and lifts her paws, so that I can wipe them. She is super loving towards our children and other dogs. It's so surprising more people haven't heard of the Coton.

Our Precious Little Girl - "Cotton"

by Sherry
(FL-----USA)

Our Coton de Tulear is now 8 months old and has completely stolen our hearts!!!! Such a joy to have around and for a puppy very very good. She finds fun things to get into but with a no no she leaves them alone. What a loving devoted pet they are.

Only problem is with food; she does not like dog food. My mistake in giving her some of ours.

Truly a wonderful breed!!!!! will keep trying to find a tasty food she will eat.

Life's Abundance
by: Anonymous

We use Life's Abundance Dog Food, ordered from their website. Wilson loved it until he got a bite of cat food. He would not touch his food for days. I now mix in a little wet food (organic) once a day. He is getting better about eating what is put out for him now.

He loves green beans raw, any veggies..really anything. HE LOVES salt and vinger chips and will go crazy until you give him one or more. He now go nuts if he hears a bag of any kind open - he thinks it is chips!!

I found that if I sprinkle his food on the floor instead of a bowl..he likes that also.

a Vegetarian
by: Lubby & Bailey

Our Bailey now 1-1/2 yrs old, is also a very picky eater. It frustrates the **** outta me. He'll just turn his nose or spit out something he loved yesterday, but doesn't want today. I have found he loves fruits and veggies. Loves red and green peppers, brocolli (the stocks only)lettuce, and carrots sometime. I have to cook up chicken breast or some of our pork roast before he'll eat any meat. I have had some luck in dog foods, but, we have 3 different kinds available...as some days he loves one and not the other. And of course, most days needs to be had fed. I have never had a dog so picky. We also, have a little havanese lady and she'll eat anything...if Bailey spits it out...she is right there to pick it up.
Good luck and a lot of patience.

Picky eater
by: Anonymous

They are precious, indeed. Oliver is 4 years old and we have adored him from day one. He, too, never met a dog food he likes. We have determined that he is allergic to grains. He has not had an ear infection since we eliminated grains. Right now he is happy with
The Honest Kitchen dehydrated food, to which I add chicken and egg. He is still picky, and waits for scraps. But, this is the best diet I have found.
Good luck with your little girl.

We LOVE our wonderful Coton de tulear companion, Miko

by Autumn
(Alexandria, VA)

running in the dog park

running in the dog park

Our 14 month old Coton, Miko (AKA "the beast) is so loving and full of personality - my husband and I cherish every silly moment with him. He was amazingly easy to housetrain and he is so well behaved overall! Plus, he does not mind getting bathed or groomed - which we have to do quite often - since he tends to get super dirty playing outside with his doggie friends. Every dog in the neighborhood absolutely LOVES Miko! He is playful and friendly with ALL dogs (big and small).

Our little guy will do ANYTHING for cheese - he loves the stuff! Just say the word and he comes running. He loves to go to the dog park, to Petsmart or on any adventure that involves riding in the car. He's a bit spoiled with tons of dog toys! We can't resist getting him stuff! His favorite toy is a stuffed monkey with floppy long arms and legs - he'll drag that thing everywhere (it's about as big as he is - so it's really cute to see him drag it around).

I don't know if other Cotons do this - but Miko makes a huge range of sounds - mainly grunting and snorting. It's hilarious when he gets super excited (usually while playing) and he sounds like a wild piggy or something. Sometimes my husband will even have a grunting conversation with him.

Our little Miko is the center of our life - he makes us so happy!

That was funny about Miko sounding like a pig. Tuffy hums himself to sleep I have to cover my mouth to keep from laughing, it is so cute and funny. It reminds me of how a baby will rock and hum themselves to sleep. It is something he has always done, ever since he was a tiny puppy. Makes me think he is part human.

Moriarty - My New Coton de Tulear Pal

by Mitch Tuckness
(Fairfax, VA. USA)

I just got my Coton de Tulear, Moriarty last week. So far he is doing well. Next week will be his first week where I go to work. I hope the training with the kennel and treats pays off. 4 hour stints can be pretty scary for a young puppy (he is 15 weeks old, but never been left alone. I have been leaving him in his kennel a few hours a day while I am in the other room, some whining and barking but eventually it tapers down.

He is a hoot though, Just learning his obedience training basics, sit, stand, stay etc ....

Such a good breed!

by: Nell

Oh... I remember those early puppy days when it was so hard to leave my dog home alone. I think it was definitely harder on me than on her. The best part about leaving is coming home to a dog who's just crazy happy to see you! Good Luck and enjoy this crazy puppy time; it seems to go by so quick.

leaving your puppy to go to work
by: Iris Miller

my point of view is in the older remarks, I had to leave Tuffy, was never told by neighbors of the constant crying and barking he did, until I moved out three months later. If I'd known he was going to be so lonely and anxious I would have found a family to baby sit him before I went back to work, because the Coton are especially social and sensitive.
Good luck,
hugs

Coton de Tulear, Spanky

We just got a Coton de Tulear this past Sunday, 9 weeks old, boy. I can not tell you how much joy this puppy has brought into our life. We named him Spanky, and when I say he's such a good boy, im not just saying that because he's my little boy.

We have only had him for 5 days, but thus far has been the apple of my eye. No accidents in the crate (hoping not to jinx it), very few accidents off the wee wee pad, is starting to understand the word No, and sleeps though the night! I have never had such a good puppy like this one ever and I must say, choosing this breed was the best thing we ever did. We are totally in love with him and he has made a great addition to our family.

by: Iris Miller

I was really lucky, Tuffy as a puppy never chewed anything except cardboard toilet paper rolls. He liked to steal your socks off your feet and beat them up and run away with them, to be chased in play. When ever he lost a baby tooth he would bring it to me and put it in my hand!
I Love my Coton.

Oh Barney! (Coton de Tulear)

by Ellen and Jimmy Ryan
(Scranton, Pa)

Barney and his best friend Cupcake

Barney and his best friend Cupcake

We have a little black Pomeranian for five years now that we just love to death! Then we thought what a great idea to get this little guy (Coton de Tulear) that I have done a lot of research on. His name was previously Cuddles (from the Breeder) when we got him home we changed his name to Barney. He is 16 weeks old now and we've had him for a month.

I can only describe him with the following adjectives - Beautiful, lovable, little pest at times, clownlike, loves to follow behind you on his hind legs, vocal, loves people, smart, mind of his own, listens well, drives our little Cupcake crazy, but we always find them sleeping snuggled up together, loves to go in the car with us, sleeps like a log at night time, snores.

With all of this good and bad when you look in those little eyes and he is counting on you to keep him safe and love him that's really all we can do. He keeps us laughing.

by: Gale

What beautiful dogs. One of the things I love about the Coton de Tulear is how they get along with other animals. I used to have a dog who wanted to be the center of attention and resented pretty much all other animals. But my Coton thinks everyone is his friend and I love when I see him and the cat sleeping together or when he's playing with other dogs in the neighborhood.

Thanks so much for sharing your story and very adorable photo of Barney and Cupcake.

by: SHERRY - COTTON

THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENTS. TO BE HONEST HER SWIMMING IS MORE OF OUR IDEA THAN HERS. WE STARTED PUTTING HER IN THE WATER SIMPLY TO KEEP HER COOL WHILE WE WERE OUTSIDE.
(I WOULD PLACE HER ON THE STEPS) ONE DAY I CARRIED HER OUT TO THE MIDDLE WITH ME, SHE WANTED LOOSE AND SWAM BACK ON HER OWN BACK TO THE STEPS. THIS IS NOW HER LITTLE GAME. I READ WHERE THEY ARE GOOD SWIMMERS, SHE REALLY IS. IF WE ARE ON OUR LITTLE FLOATING MATS SHE WILL CLIMB ON, RIDE AWHILE AND THEN STAND UP WHEN SHE WANTS BACK ON LAND.
WE TAKE HER TO THE SIDE AND SHE JUMPS OFF.

WE NEVER LEAVE HER UNATTENDED IN THE WATER, SHE NEVER CLIMBS IN UNLESS WE ARE IN THE POOL. HAVE TRIED THROWING A TOY IN THERE BUT SO FAR SHE HAS NOT JUMPED IN AFTER IT.

SHE IS OUR LITTLE TREASURE.

Our handsome boy "Sir Jackson" - Coton de Tulear

by JD
(Connecticut)

"Sir" Jackson

Jackson became a part of our family when he was 8 weeks old. He's now a little over 3 months and is a ball of fun, and brings us so much joy! He has been so easy to train, he even rings a bell that hangs on the door when it's time to go outside because he is not a very vocal dog.

I would recommend a Coton to any dog lover; they are such a great breed!

crying
by: janet

My 12month old coton, Zoe, cries for attention and sometimes cries when she needs to go out. I'm having a difficult time knowing how to decifer her cries. Sometimes she doesn't even cry or give any signal - just goes on the carpet. She's the sweetest dog, but the accidents are driving me crazy! I would like to try the bells, but I have a large house and would need lots of ringers.

My "Poor" Jackson
by: JD

Thanks Iris,
As I read your post I was getting a visual and giggling to myself. Too cute! Our little guy loves it outside as well, but I think to just play in the grass and see how much he can fit in his mouth.....lol.
Had to take our baby to the Vet today. He was throwing up last night and again this morning. He really hasn't been himself at all today (I'm a concerned mommy). The vet thinks he got into something that irritated his belly. After a belly x-ray, IV fluids under the skin, and a shot of antacid, we came home and he crashed for most of the day. He's now on a bland diet for 5 days, and 1/8 tablet of antacids. This is the second time he has done this in his short 15 weeks of life; the first time not as bad as this time.
I want to know if it's a common thing in Coton's to have sensitive digestive systems. I currently feed him Purina One puppy dry food along with a little wet food mixed in (only because that's what he was use to when we got him). Any info or suggestions would be great.
PS.....Jackson seems to be doing better tonight....he's been playing a bit. :-)

Hugs
Jackson & JD

ring the bell to go out
by: IRIS

Hi, Jackson is gorgeous. I have never seen a Coton with a black face, though if you look at our pictures, Tuff did have quite a bit of color at an early age but is all white now, except for grey hair on his ears. It will be interesting to watch Bailey grow and see how (if) he also turns white.
The bell idea is a great idea. Wish I'd known about it earlier. I think if I taught him now he would drive me nuts ringing the bell. We do not have a fenced yard and are on a very dangerous busy traffic road. Tuffy is also pretty quiet and just jumps up and down staring me in the eyes to read his mind, and I am to know it means "gotta go right now!" Lately with the nicer weather and more animal and people activity, my little busy body Coton "fakes it" a lot. He makes me think he needs to go, but he really just wants to go outside to see what's happening out there. He will sit on the grass and watch the neighbors, watch the cars, listen for dogs, hunt critter scents, and want to go walking. Not fun for me at 11: PM!!!! Maybe in winter we will work on the bell lesson.
hugs from Tuffy and Mom Iris

Jul 02, 2010
Re: How?
by: Anonymous

Hi Tracy,

From the moment we brought Jackson home, we hung a large bell on the door knob, and everytime we took him outside we rang the bell. At times we even encouraged him to ring it himself before we went out the door. Eventually he went over and rang it himself, and we would take him out immediately. However, we do need to get a second one, because he has discovered the slidding glass door that leads to the back yard as well, but he just sits there and waits. So we do have to watch him.
I would say try the bell, and just be consistant with it, taking him out every hour or two and ring the bell as you do. Eventually he should catch on.
Good luck.....keep me informed on the progress.

Hi!
I've had my little guy since 8 weeks and he's now a bit over 4 months. I would LOVE for him to ring the bell or...signal in any way that he wants to go out. But so far, it 'aint happening. HOW did you get him to do that? We love our guy, but we're struggling with potty training and the fact that once he starts barking, he has a hard time stopping.

Gino.......
by: Stephanie

Gino does get matted under his collar, chest & legs. I had to switch him to a chest collar when walking or putting him in the car because he escapes & slips out of the neck collar. Keeping Gino white is a lot of work. He always gets a dirty beard after eating his dinner or when he is working on his granola busy bone. It is so true about the blowing v.s. air concept, he gets so mad when we blow in his face but can not get enough of the wind, go figure?.... He is worth all the work though, I adore my Gino. :) Thank you for the kind comments and advice. Please keep them coming, for I am a new owner of only 10 months.

They love the wind in their face, but hate it if you blow at them. So funny.
I read years ago that it is possible that a dog who sticks his or her face in the wind can get something blown into their eye. I guess watch out for irritation would be the best advice. Go Gino!

Coton de Tulear, Kooper and his first JeepJaunt (April 2010)

by BJ
(Virginia)

Kooper

Kooper

Kooper at approximately 5 months old. My husband and I like to take JeepJaunts through the mountains of Virginia in a wide-open Jeep Wrangler and wanted a dog that we could take with us.

This was Koop's first trip and he did superbly (didn't quite have it wide-open for first trip). We stopped where there was a nice stream and Kooper promptly went wading in it, chased a bug, splashed around a bit..then peed in the water. Since this day we have gone on several trips with Kooper tethered to me while on my lap in the front seat or on the console between us in a special set-up by my husband. He doesn't like his harness/tether much but knows it is the only way he gets to ride!

Maxine - The tazmanian devil!

by Carol
(Glenview, Illlinois)

Maxine.is 6 months old. Her mother was a Coton de Tulear but her father was a maltese..but I know she is more Coton..she stands on her hind legs a lot and looks just like a coton with the yellow on her ears.

Maxine is only 6 lbs (I think) but she can pull a lot more than her weight. She loves tools and my husband will find wrenches etc all over the house as much as he hides them..and napkins and paper...dumping over my husbands little trash can in his office is the highlight of her day!

She pulls the rugs out of the bathroom and those and everything else end up in the front hallway..She definitely makes us giggle!

There is just no excuse...
by: Steve, co-owned by Max

There is just no excuse for this little monster, she gets mats and eats food and makes messes and chases the neighbors and thinks she is tough and she runs when others try to pet her and she doesn't always eat and she curls up on my neck to nap and she sits on my arm when driving so she can see out and growl viciously at other dogs and she runs every detail of the entire neighborhood from the front house window and sits up next to me like a people to watch TV until a dog shows up on the screen which sends her going to get it. She knocks the shampoo bottle into the tub. She jumps into exposed underpants and chews. she has a stubborn attitude and will hesitate before following any order, as if deciding whether or not it suits her fancy. loves to run. chases her own tail. just cute.

What a joy these little animals are! I can't say enough about the Coton de Tulear, but I guess since you're reading this site, you already know what a secret pleasure they are - or - someday hope to know. I found this site a tremendous resource when doing research about the breed. Thank you to all who contribute. I am always learning something.

Our Precious Coton de Tulear, Molly

by Anne Pombrekas
(Glenmoore PA)

Molly in her Bed

Molly in her Bed

Molly came to us unexpectedly. We were looking for a rescue and had seen pictures of dogs online at Last Chance Ranch in Quakertown PA (a no-kill ranch). When we got to the Ranch, there were many small dogs from a hoarding situation. The dogs we met did not connect with us and they all were very unhealthy, so we were concerned.

Last Chance Ranch was not letting us leave without a dog. We spotted Molly walking off a truck from the Philadelphia SPCA. She was abandoned. We connected immediately and the love story began.

We had no idea what kind of dog she was until a stranger told us she was positive she was a Coton de Tulear. We had never heard of this type of dog. We went online and found your site. And we knew immediately what breed Molly was. She fit every personality description and closely resembles every dog we have seen in your newsletter and videos.

She is precious, funny, loving, laid back and has become our best friend. She runs like the wind and her agility ability is amazing. She alerts us to squirrels, foxes, deer and anything that may come into "her" yard. She is an amazing dog and has brought so much unconditional love into our lives. In fact, her vet suggested she become a therapy dog because she is so sweet and loving.

we found Molly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by: dorothy

Our Molly was lost and we are lucky to have her. She has a black eye and the other is lined in black so her eyes are incredible. This is our 2 year,?and with massage and hugs everyday, plus a brushing and a tummy rub...We think Molly is a part coton de tulear, and her tail is like a fountain, long and white...she has dark spots on one side, white on the other...Her hair is soft and she doesn;t loose much, just a curl or two...Molly is very smart and loves to walk on her back feet(licking yogurt_ and dance around in circles)She is always on my bed and waits for me she in the morning for her brushing and massage.
I love Molly and so does my husband...she is our kid! and I hope she lives a real long life. She is about 3 years, but we are not sure of this..
Thanks for reading about our loving Mollyxxxx

Dirty Dog, Fifi

Fifi (coton de tulear) is just so loving, loves being cuddled like my daughter's favourite teddy "Mr Cuddles". She has proved a little stubborn to house train but is now trained at 4 months, loves digging, chasing leaves and chewing sticks. Bathes 3 times a week and just sits there. Sleeps upside down with her legs in the air.

Fifi
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

When Jonah was young he used to carry rocks around in his mouth. We have an enclosed back yd. w/grass & small rocks around the outside. It always amazed me where he even found the bigger stones.

In the summer when his face had the mud appearance I would put water in the kids pool which he would jump in & rinse off. On the cooler days I have an attachment that goes where the shower head is & works for baths or muddy rinse offs.

Thank goodness he has out grown digging but it brings back many funny memories.

Meet our Cotons - Chester & Phoebe Eby

by Donna & Dene
(Charleston, SC)

Chester & Phoebe Eby - A Sweet Moment

Chester & Phoebe Eby - A Sweet Moment

Granted, all Cotons are great. However, we named our Chester after the longed-for "world's greatest dog" from the Bruce Willis movie, The Kid. In our eyes he is just that.

We entered him in the Charleston (SC) Area Lowcountry Cutest Pet contest, and he took first place and was the cover pet on the 2011 calendar! But was it his celebrity stardom or his visit with our son's hybrid wolf/Siberian that caused Chester to develop a nasty aggressive side? He was diagnosed with fear aggression. Maybe spending Christmas with the big, bad wolf wasn't such a good idea, ya think?

Anyway, after a lot of work, he seems to have that issue behind him. So, we decided to take the risk of introducing a little sister Coton de Tulear into the mix. Phoebe Eby (a black/grey/white beauty) was flown from a fabulous kennel in Houston to our home in the Carolinas. We held our collective breath to see how Chester would react to her. You guessed it; within a week she was running the place! And running, and running!

After his photo shoot our Chester had gotten so pudgy that we started referring to him as Chubby Chester (even if he can't do the Twist)! Four months later, on a steady diet of chase-and-be-chased, he is continuing to lose weight.

And, oh, yeah, Chester and Phoebe Eby are connected-at-hip best buds!

Phoebe's First Heat
by: Dene & Donna

We are approaching the end of Phoebe's 1st heat. She was confused at first, then developed a very keen interest in her (adopted) brother, Chester. Though, neutered, Chester has been enjoying this new experience. We are contemplating breeding Phoebe on her 2nd heat (around August). We, of course, would be looking for a sire with excellent bloodlines (and like Phoebe's traced back six generations). Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,

coton de tulear darling duo
by: Danielle

What an adorable pair! It's easy to see why Chester won the contest - he's a handsome little Coton. Sounds like he's not just a pretty face - he's also got plenty of personality. Not surprising that he'd become even more wonderful when a little girl entered the picture. It's lovely that they have each other, and the best thing is that it's easy to tell them apart. Love Phoebe Eby's coloring. Enjoy these precious Cotons!

My Three Cotons -- Daisy, Poppy & Tulip

by Kathy
(Aiken, SC)

Daisy is 6 years old. I've had the best time with this dog. She is very sweet and affectionate and very attached to me. For a long time I thought that I would breed her (just once), so I did not have her spayed until last year. I decided that instead, I would just buy her some puppies. So last May I brought home Poppy and Tulip.

They are so adorable and fun to watch. I love to watch them run. They have the best time. All are different. Daisy is more anxious than the other two, but they are helping her with that. Tulip (aka Wild Tulip) is just a little bit hyper, but hilarious. Poppy is the sweetest but also the loudest.

In the photo, Daisy is the top, Poppy is on the left and Tulip is on the right.

My Coton was older when I aquired her. She has always been very "skittish", anxious with sudden noise, jumpy at anything that surprises her. Is this unique to her, or does your Daisy act this way, or do you know if it is a Coton trait?Thank you

Our Quirky Coton de Tulear, Haribo

We have had our 1 year old Coton de Tulear "Haribo" since she was 3 months old, I grew up with larger dogs like labs and goldens, but I picked this breed due to the temperament. She has made a great addition to our furry family of 3 cats and a ferret. In fact she and the ferret are best of friends.

We also had to deal with separation anxiety (that took several months) and car sickness(this is still not resolved )even after getting vet tips and trying almost everything. she does not want to leave the house. Once we have gotten to our destination she is very happy but she hates to leave the house. All in all she is our love, just very quirky.

Lola loves the car
by: Diana

I adopted LOlA 4/1/11 from North Shore Animal League She is a rescue from a puppymill in Georgia.AMAZINGLY she loved the car from day one on the way home from Port Washington. She has a car seat that she loves to sit in and watch the cars go by.I take her to beach a lot and coffee stops,I get her a cup with ice cubes in it she loves to take them out of the cup her self as she feels she needs one. I love, love love this little girl. She has had a rogh start, she is 2yrsols, I hear to make sure the rest of her sweet little life is the best. I thought it was odd that comming from a puppymill for 2yrs and then to a shelter, that she would take to the car the way she did. It took longer for her to get trust me Diana

Quirky Coton
by: Anonymous

Sounds like my Sammi - she always hated to leave the house, but we wanted a dog that would go EVERYWHERE with us so we kept taking her... and now it's hard to remember those days because now she hates to stay home. If you even look at the front door or head toward the car keys she's there ready to go. Don't give up, eventually connect leaving home with good experiences. Cotons are so amazing!!

loves to kiss people ears
by: Anonymous

Sandy, My coton loves to kiss and nibble on people ears. Just the other week I had a group of people at the beach. Every day after she got up and we for her walk. She would come back in the house and visit each bedroom looking for people that was still asleep. As soon as she found someone in bed. She would jump up on the bed and start given people kisses until they would get up and play with her. Good thing everyone is a dog lover. I do not know what I would have done if they did not like dogs.

New Chapter in my Life

by Maureen
(Antioch, CA)

I recently retired and found that my two wonderful cats were not much company in the afternoon (sleeping). I decided that I had the time to devote to a dog (since my corporate job had me away from home so much).

Researching breeds that matched my personality, I found the Coton de Tulear. I read everything I could find on the breed and visited a breeder 3 hours from my home. I feel in love with Mozzie the moment I saw her. She is the sweetest dog I've ever known! My husband loves her too!

I've had her for almost two months and everyone loves her and she loves everyone! The only issue is my two cats are still not accepting the puppy, but maybe in time they will come to love her as I do.

WHAT A GORGEOUS LITTLE FACE!! SHE IS ADORABLE. LOOKS LIKE A LITTLE STUFFED TOY! COTON'S ARE A VERY SPECIAL BREED AND LIKE YOU, I DID ALOT OF RESEARCH IN SELECTING A NEW DOG. YOU CHOSE WELL AND AS YOU HAVE FOUND OUT THEY ARE IN LOVE WITH EVERYTHING; AS FOR THE CATS, I BELIEVE TIME WILL WORK THAT OUT. THEY ARE PROBABLY RESENTFUL OF THIS NEW INTRUDER IN THEIR DOMAIN.

COTTON AND I WISH YOU MANY HAPPY YEARS WITH MOSSIE.

WE HAVE TWO STRAY CATS THAT HANG AROUND OUTSIDE, WE FEED THEM AND THEY WILL COME IN HER PLAY FENCED AREA AND SHE LOVES IT -- RUNNING CIRCLES AROUND THEM WHILE THEY LAY AND WATCH. IN TIME I BET MOSSIE WILL BE DOING THE SAME.

GOOD LUCK

Lassie & Gaston
by: Anonymous

My kitty, Lassie was 16 y/o when I brought my 4 y/o Coton, Gaston into our home. She used to chase after him on her hind legs while swinging her front paws at his hyde. Occasionally he would yelp when she got him good. I never thought they would assimilate. But it is amazing what we do for love, because in their later years they would curl up on either side of me. Transitioning to this point, I would hide Gaston under the blanket (so Lassie wouldn't pop him) and she would prance up and curl up nearly on top of him. Everybody knew the other was there, but somehow the blanket barrier made Lassie & Gaston more comfortable with each other.

Oh, my, she is so beautiful. Reminds me of my little guy at that age and what a sweet and wonderful pet he is. You made a good decision and a wonderful selection. Enjoy every minute with her.

Charlie
by: Anonymous

Charlie was born with a bobbed tail. The vet said it was not genetic, but rather a little crowded in momma so it couldn't develop the right way. When he gets a haircut he looks like a baby polar bear!
Check out this video: www.dogwork.com/walkd2b
The cute dog looks like a Coton. Charlie likes to stand up, too!
I got him a new toy, Mr. Bill. It says OHHH NOOO!

We haven't let Charlie swim yet, but I'm sure he'd live it. He does like to chase squirrels! Our Maltese, Bear, that died at the groomer was only 8 yrs. old, and had no known health problems. I'll never get over it...

Cute
by: Kathy

Scary about Bear. How did this happen.

Charlie is so cute. Looks like my Daisy -- she also has a curly coat.

Moriarty sounds adorable with his squirrel buddy. One of my 2 younger cotons (Tulip) was plying in the water bowl so I got them a baby pool. They both love it. Poppy puts her whole head underwater and walks around with her eyes open. So funny.

Apr 30, 2012
Wow is he curly!
by: Mitchell Tuckness

Sorry to hear about the old dog. That kinda scares me because Moriarty goes to the groomer every week! It's at my vets, but still scary if a dog can die there.

Does Charlie like the water? I haven't been around a lake to let Moriarty go and see if he likes water (to swim in) but he sure does like arguing with the squirrel in the back yard! Never seen anything like it they each stand on one side of the fence and Morty barks and the squirrel chirps!

Kooper Goes To The Salon!!

by BJ
(Virginia)

Kooper

Kooper

I went to my hair salon to just get my bangs cut. My husband and "Kooper" waited for me in the car. When done, I brought Kooper in to see my stylist and we laughed because his bangs were so long he could hardly see from behind them. So my stylist decided she wanted to cut his bangs too! And she did! It was fun and Kooper enjoyed all the attention the ladies gave him and got a big biscuit as a reward for being such a good doggie. As you can see from the picture...his big beautiful eyes can see beyond the fringe again.

Angel Eyes and ear grooming
by: Jolie's Mom

I started using Angel Eyes on my poodle, Prissy, and her eyes were bad! The tear ducts that run down through there nose were stopped up, we had them cleared but it happened again. I saw the ad for the Angel Eyes and tried it. It does work and I gradually cut back until I was only giving 1/4 teaspoon once a week. I mixed it in with a little bit of canned food and she loved it. Jolie doesn't have as much tear stains, but I have been using it. I found it at drugstore.com a lot cheaper than the Angel Eyes web site. It was the 120gram bottle of the beef flavor for $29.99 and I think it usually runs about $79.99.

About the tangles in the ear hair, you can also use the childrens spray tangle remover, just don't use too much or it can get a little greasy feeling. If you spray it in and then work it in, the tangles come out pretty well. I keep Jolie pretty short, because one of her favorite games is to tunnel under the covers and roll around. My husband calls her the "Blankie Monster" and she can get pretty wild!!

Leila's Ear's
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

Cowboy Magic if u look it up is for horses, dogs, & people. The detangler product lasts a long time. Use it after bath while wet before u comb out. Rub into ur hands & apply.

When I have been a bad mom & not brushed for a week I use the Cowboy Magic rosewater conditioner mixed 16 water to 1 cond. Other times 32:1.

The reason I keep going back to this product is as i find Coton grooming websites all say not to use oil products & anything with lanolin in it. Most sites I find for Coton's is when I use key words Cotton dog, Cotton dog hair.Alot from UK.

I am self taught. I have learned from trial & error. I see my mistakes but everyone who meets him finds him cute. My hair is straight, thin & semi long. I follow how after I wash my hair not to pull when I comb it out as how to work Jonah's long hair. I hope this has helped in some small way.

Leila's Ear's
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

U can try & use Cowboy Magic Detangler & rub into the mats to loosen. It is very tricky cutting by the ears not to nip it. Or decide if it will hurt to comb them out decide to let ur groomer cut them out. Her hair will grow back & while it does you can start fresh by keeping it combed. It is 100% better not to pull the hair when grooming. They do not forget & makes grooming harder in the future.

Looks great!
by: Wendy

Our Leila was groomed this week and doesn't look as good as your Kooper! Good job! I have a question. The groomer told us Leila's ears were matted and he wanted to shave them. We didn't realize that was happening, didn't allow her ears to be shaved, but now have to try to figure out how to handle it ourselves without hurting her. Any suggestions?

Thank you!
by: BJ

Thank you all for your comments re: Kooper's trip to the salon! Although my husband and I try to take care of all Kooper's grooming needs...we had gone too long taking care of his bangs so it was nice for my stylist to step in and take care of them!! Kooper is almost 2 years old and we've been doing self-grooming on him since he was a puppy so as not to have to leave him with a groomer and pay the high cost We have been trying to teach ourselves and we do a so-so job. He won't win any prices and I've given him baboon-butt a couple of times. Bad BJ! We got a small grooming table and all the implements. I primarily use a 2 speed clipper with a #4 blade. It's a long process as we do not try to do it all in an hour or so - we usually spread it out 3 days (bath first day). We keep him short for the convenience. He matts terribly if the hair gets too long. Hardest part for me is actually his legs and his muzzle. Would like to find an itsy clipper that won't clip too short.

Would love to hear from others that are trying to self-groom their Cotons and what techniques and tools they are using. Kooper is tolerant as long as his reward is baby food.

Kooper is so cute!! Jolie is also all white and we keep her cut kinda short, like Kooper, because its easier to keep her clean!! She loves to play in the yard, especially chasing my Rottwieler, Taz!! I do keep her tail long, though, because it's so cute!! She holds it up high and reminds me of Pebbles Flintstone!! We hope you, your husband and Kooper have a great Halloween!!

Ring-a-ring-a-Rocco??

by Kate
(Ireland)

Rocco snoozing after one of his ring-a-runs!!

Rocco snoozing after one of his ring-a-runs!!

Hello all!

My first story that I am putting up here about my lil man, Rocco.

He is 7 months old and as bold as brass!! A cheeky little thing with a great personality!! He was the last of his litter, so I was SO lucky to even get him!

We have just moved house so I was a bit worried that he would be a bit out of sorts, you know? - having to learn where new things are, and where his bed is etc. But he LOVES it. We moved beside the beach and if possible... he is a better dog than before! He just loves going out and running around with all the other dogs we meet. He gets SO much attention with people going out of their way to come up and pet him and play with him (and laughing at how this tiny little guy gives their big dogs a run for their money, fearless!!!)He is so happy!!

But one thing I have noticed from moving, and being able to let him off his lead on the big beach is, that he runs in these perfect circles or figures of eight, leaned over like a motorbike racer!! Its such good fun to watch and he just goes on and on!!

I was wondering, does anyone elses little Coton do this or is Rocco just as mad as I suspected??!!!!

Thanks for reading :)

Rocco's twin!
by: Anonymous

My Murphy does the same thing! As a matter of fact, that picture of Rocco could be Murphy's twin! He's close to the same age. It's so funny to watch! He ran in the wet yard yesterday & would NOT come in the house for anything! He finally came on in when he was good & tired and FILTHY!!! He got a bath after that one & then ran himself again to dry! He was one tired baby yesterday!!

Crazy Cotons
by: Gale

There's another post somewhere on the site about what we've labeled crazy dog syndrome - where our Cotons just run super fast in big circles. Luc did that a lot when he was a puppy, but now that he's five, he only does it once in a while. I wonder if it's a Coton thing or if all breeds do this.

Thanks for sharing Rocco with us!

Mad dog
by: Vickie

My dog Brucy is just a mad as your Rocco. He loves to run in wide open spaces. He also loves to play with the big dogs. He is so funny to watch. He has a great personality and loves all the attention he can get from people. He Has a doberman and a bermeese mt. dog that he plays with the most. It is so funny to see the size difference and watch them play.

Is Bacon a Coton de Tulear?

by Wye Yinn
(Singapore)

I adopted Bacon about a year ago from his first owner who had neglected him. He is 4 years old now. I was told he was a pure breed but could not ask more as the owner was not sure. At first, I thought he was a maltese, but he was too "big sized" to be one, he is about 7.3 kg and built more like a schnauzer. So for a period of time, I thought he was a white schnauzer. But his face looked more maltese.

The search for Bacon's breed stopped and I concluded he is actually a cross. I have never heard of Cotons until yesterday when I chance upon a website. Cotons are not common from where I come from, Singapore.

Bacon has a very obliging character, he is intelligent and learns fast. He always seems happy. We nicknamed him "Happy Dog" because he always seems eager to please and be happy.

So is Bacon a Coton? That is the question in my head now =)

Coton Dog?

Bacon sure does look like a Coton. That big beautiful black nose is a definite Coton de Tulear feature, not to mention the happy disposition. It's hard to tell from one photo, but to me, Bacon looks more like a Coton than a Maltese.

Is it a lamb, is it a bear, no it's a Coton de Tulear!

by Chris

Simply wonderful

Simply wonderful

Once upon a time in a land of mystery and intrigue, where pirates roamed free, came a unlikely companion for the warriors of the waves. This gorgeous bundle of coton became a companion to ruffians and scoundrels brought aboard to control the rats and entice the Madagascan beauties into the pirates arms. Thank you to the land of Madagascar for this amazing and beautiful animal. Ours, Poppy, is 6 months old and an angel. She is the perfect companion and lights up every waking moment with her beautiful smile, soft hair, kind and gentle nature and amazingly intelligence and personality. She makes our family whole.

Poppy is gorgeous. We adopted our Molly and didn't have her as a puppy. Wish we had because she is also a beauty but couldn't imagine how cute she must have been as a young pup. Now I know - she looks like Poppy but has black in her ears. Molly is an amazing dog too. So intelligent, beautiful, and her calm, sweet nature is endearing. Over the years, we've had wonderful dogs, but a Coton is different and so very special. Wish you and Poppy a wonderful life together and glad you found each other.

Our Coton de Tulear, Burt

by Cesar
(Amarillo, Texas)

Burt coming home for the first time.

Burt coming home for the first time.

It took us all day driving over 500 miles to adopt Burt. It was well worth it. We brought him home to his adopted brother, a very mild mannered mutt we raised named George. George was very lonely after losing his Yorky brother who we had to put down after 17 years. George made the last half of our beloved Gizmo's life happy ones. Now Burt is doing the same for George.

They love spending all day playing until exhaustion sets in and then, sleepy time.

We'd never heard of Cotons before and can't understand why. Great breed! We'll love him forever.

I had never heard of Cotons either until we were looking for a puppy to add to our little family. We went thru all the different breeds list, reading about all the different dogs. we came upon the coton and read about them. luckily we found a AKC registered breeder about an hour down the road. So we decided to go and have a look. Well needless to say I had to have one. I am so glad we have our coton. His personality just shines through and he is just so funny he keeps us all laughing. He was the perfect addition to our family.

My coton de tulear protector

by Diane
(Gilbert, SC)

I've had my Coton de Tulear, Jolie, for 4 years. She is a delightful creature. I can't imagine a better dog. The funny thing about her is her loyalty. When my husband and I disagree or have an argument, she won't have anything to do with him until we make up. She even growls at him when he comes to bed. She is always on my side whether I'm right or wrong. Everyone should have a Jolie.

He almost looks like Moriarty when he was younger. Moriarty was a Champagne Teddy Bear Coton as well, now at a 1 1/2 he is as white as snow. With the fade gene they have that color fades to the very tips of the hair to where you can almost not see it (depending on how dark it was to start).

Cute pup. enjoy! :)

Zoe, our cheese loving Coton de Tulear

by gary
(columbus ohio)

Every morning, Zoe will not go outside to do her business till she hears the ruffling sound of a slice of cheese being separated from its plastic wrapper. Then she comes bounding down the stairs for her treat and then runs to the door to go out.

She is super special. We have had her for 3 years now and everywhere we go, people are always complimenting this breed. Actually, when we returned from the breeder with Zoe three years ago, within 2 months, there were 2 more Cotons on our street. Here are some pics of Zoe. Enjoy!

Do you have a 3 year old picture of her? My dog Tuffy also had a lot of color as a puppy, but now at three years old, is all white, with a bit of grey on his ears. I really loved the tri color coat (see Coton photos here) and had no idea it would change.

Coton de Tulear, Kevin

by Michael Bayot
(Quezon City, Philippines)

Kevin's first visit to vet

Kevin's first visit to vet

I am from the Philippines and I am a lucky owner of this rare Coton de Tulear dog. My Kevin loves to run around the house, eats his treats on his bed, sleeps under the sofa chair while his four legs are spread.

At 4 months old, he enjoys rough playing already like pulling the bath towel, wrestling, etc. So far, my sister and mother love him so much since he was the first dog in the family.

My only problem is that I cannot find another Coton de Tulear owner here in the Philippines. I wish I could find one so that my Kevin can play with his own family and hopefully, spread his genes to eventually increase the population of Cotons here in the Philippines.

cotons
by: rsl

I have a coton de tulear as well. Female and 2 years old. My sister has a male coton the same age. Since they're siblings, I'd rather not have them breed. I haven't decided whether I should have my coton bred or not. But if I do or if anyone else decides to, it must be done responsibly.

This is the second one time I've raised a coton. First one I had I bought when I was in the US. Personally, the best breed and I've raised different other breeds before my coton.

Want to buy Coton de Tulear
by: Victoria

Hi Kevin
I live in the Philippines and looking to buy a male Coton de Tulear. I notice you posted this note last year. Do you by this time know of breeder that I can contact? I also worry about the dog's adaptability to a hot climate. Can I cut its hair short, and perhaps give it a daily bath? Thanks.

Our little Vinny - Coton de Tulear

by Jovana
(The Hague, The Netherlands)

Coton de Tulear

Coton de Tulear

My husband and I have jobs that take us far away from our families and to foreign countries. I kept asking for a dog so I would be less homesick, and just last week for my birthday my hubby bought me Vinny.

He is our little luv bug monster who loves to kiss and play. He is, however a little afraid of cars, but we're working on it! For teething, we give Vinny a baby carrot straight from the fridge. He loves it, and I don't feel bad about giving him "junk food". Truly an amazing breed. I am so happy with "my lil man."

Best birthday present, ever, hands down!

Vinny is a hunk! If you ever come to Brazil let him "date" our Sophie! :):) they seem to be the same age...

We tried the carrot today, she was not so excited about it, I hope she likes it in the future.

Congratulations! The Coton de Tulear is just an amazing breed!

A good way to car train the dog
by: Moxamomma Iris

I started Tuffy's car rides when he was a little pup by always having him get in his soft carrier ( his safe place) and carried him out of the house in it and put it in the back seat of the car. Eventually he figured out that he could open the velcro flap on top and also how to unzip the door from the inside*(smart Coton!) so I started leaving the front flap open and he would eventually climb out and sit on the back seat, then go back in and sleep in his "cave". Tuffy is two years old now, he hops right into the back seat of the car now, and the only thing about riding in the car that bothers him is the clicking of the signal indicator. He whimpers every time I signal to turn. I have a picture of him at just two months old asleep in his carrier (that was the day he had his first taste of "mellow mut" the chicken strips with calming herbs, and was so relaxed he zonked out! Go to my link to see the pictures.
hugs, Iris

Your Vinny sounds so much like Luc, who was also afraid of cars when I got him (he's totally over that now) and also loves carrots.

Coton de Tulear Canine Cash

by Greg
(Ohio)

Our little Coton, Rudy, seems to know about money.....He is constantly getting into my wife's purse and the only things he takes are the check book and any paper money. The "goods" always find their way under our bed, maybe he's saving for a new Barbi doll? He's 9 months old and our spoiled baby.....best breed around....

no purse games
by: Iris Miller

I agree, I would not want my dog to get into anything in my purse, I carry aspirin and antihistamines and anti diarreahs, tums, pescriptions, gum,all that stuff.etc. When I am getting something in my purse Tuffy is right there sticking his nose in. I think it attracts him because I had a baggie of liver treats in there once and he knew it, and it probably still smells even though I don't have any more in the purse. He is also attracted to the minty gum in my purse so I tell him no and push him away. Just like kids, our dogs need boundaries!

cash coton....
by: deborah

I agree w/below...I would hide and cease the purse game...one day he may find something that might be eaten, perhaps by mistake, and it might not be so good....think he is seeking your wife's scent....if the keys are next....there goes the car....they ARE the best absolutely.

Purse
by: Anonymous

Why is the purse being left where the Coton can get to it? Now that your Coton knows the purse "game" leave the purse in a closet, drawer or somewhere the Coton can't get to it.

Wall-E - our beautiful, macho, funny coton de tulear dog with the biggest heart

by Jill
(North Carolina)

Wall-E

Wall-E

Wall-E is the sweetest, most affectionate companion coton de tulear dog. He loves to be snuggled up close to one of us as often as possible. He especially likes to curl up on the couch and wrap around behind my neck.

Although he prances when he walks and looks so beautiful, his inner personality is a tough guy who would take on any big dog and he has a loud and urgent bark. He likes to talk a lot and makes a lot of throaty sounds when he is happy.

He is so quirky about his food. It seems so bizarre to me that a dog doesn't like a bone and only likes one type of treats! He spins in circles and goes crazy for lasagna or anything with tomato sauce. He loves to walk with me around the neighborhood and meet other dogs. He still insists on being in the lead. The cats hit him on the nose many times but he would just wag his tail and has never given up on trying to be their friend.

He makes our whole family happy every day and loves to give kisses especially to kids. Walle brings so much love and laughter to us. We adore our coton!!

WALL-E ...BEAUTIFUL COTON
by: CJ

You are so fortunate to have all these wonderful characteristics in your Wall-E. I love the sounds they make when happy; but our little girl only makes these when company comes, especially our grandsons. She rarely makes these sounds for us. Her mannerism with us is to roll over and want her tummy rubbed (which is a sign of submission) or to throw back her head and want to be petted or play with a toy. As far as wanting to be held ~ not really. She likes to jump up on the leather recliner and just sit along side us. So, these Cotons are quite playful and affectionate, but unique. They are really wonderful companions and great with children. Your Wall-E is just so handsome! Thanks for posting !

Oliver wins everyones heart

by Ed Waldrop
(Rancho Mirage, CA)

Oliver - Coton de Tulear

Oliver - Coton de Tulear

Our Coton de Tulear, Oliver, became a member of our family just as he turned 6 weeks old in August of 2004. He has never met a stranger since!

He adores children and is exceptionally social with his creature "friends". He loves to hike, go for long morning walks and "car rides". He loves to be included as a real family member and lets you know immediately if he isn't!

We never had to house train him; it just happened. At 12 weeks old he knew what to do when he wanted to go out. The Coton dog is the most exceptional creature we have ever met!

Play dates
by: Lynda

Hi Iris. Tuffy sounds alot like Zorro. He likes Bischons. Maltese, and other fluffy light colored dogs. Zorro is afraid of big dogs, dislikes bulldogs French or otherwise. Zorro is our 1st dog since my husband and I were kids. Like you Zorro is our baby and so much fun. We're in Orange County South, at least an hour from LA. Anyway it's great even talking with another Coton lover. Lynda

Coton playmates
by: Iris Miller

Wish I were back in CA., I'd bring Tuffy for a play date! Tuffy is also three years old and very playful. He loves to play with other dogs that look like him. I might get to go to Angeles to see my new granddaughter this summer, it would be great to find a Coton family for Tuffy to visit with and play with. This is my dilemma, my daughter lives in a small L.A. apartment, no dogs allowed, she has a cat, a husband and a baby, no room for Tuffy to be there with me, but I cannot leave him in CT, we need to be together and close enough for me to go back and forth to spend time with him too (he is my baby!).I am hoping a Coton relative in the area will baby sit him while I visit the human baby. That's a big wish, I hope it comes true!

Bailey, you handsome devil

by Lubby
(North Vancouver, BC)

those gorgeous eyes

those gorgeous eyes

I just signed Bailey up for puppy agility. He runs around the yard doing crazy 8's going 90 MPH. I had to take him to the groomer to trim the hair over his eyes so he could see to tackle the jumps and run the tunnels and was so nervous as I just loved his hair over his eyes. As you can see in this pic, just how beautiful his eyes are and I can't believe I kept them covered.

Bailey has a beautiful face and a great haircut!
by: IRIS

I have been using the grooming kit and gave Tuffy a haircut twice, both times took me two days(including the bath and blow dry) I am not happy with the tools that came with the set, it's junky.None of the combs work with the clippers at all! I had to use only the clipper heads which made the hair choppy looking, and trim with the scisors. I sure wish we had Bailey;s groomer!
I had planned to enroll Tuffy in an agility class also. He does the same zipping and running around. We were going to an indoor dog park and it was used for training. Most times we went we were alone or maybe one other dog was there. It was the only place Tuffy could run free without a leash. Each time we signed in for the dog park we got a card punched and when we had 10 visits we were entitled to a free agility training class. When I took Tuffy for the class there was a power outage and the store was closed.
i took him back another time and unfortunately, the pet and plant supply store it was in went out of business.

My precious Coton de Tulear, Misha

by Adele Estherson
(Manorville, L.I.,NY-USA)

I've wanted a dog for the past several years but between one thing and another (including double knee surgery) I just kept putting it off. By chance, my daughter-in-law's sister could no longer keep her Coton de Tulear and as she would only give the dog to a family member, I was the fortunate one.

Misha is 18 months, tri-colored, cute as a button, fully trained and just the sweetest little dog I've ever known. I've had dogs all my life and never even heard of a Coton but now I can't help spreading the word to friends and family as to the fantastic Coton de Tulear breed. She's not only the cutest, most well behaved, gentle, and funny dog I've ever had but she's also very smart and learns very quickly.

How lucky can a gal get!

our Sushi

by Lucy
(Israel)

My husband decided to bring me a puppy as a present for my 27th birthday. Since we're both have many allergies, it was clear to us we'll have a hyper allergic one. We've been looking for dogs, when my husband found out about the Cotons. Since it's rare we were afraid we won't find it in Israel, but luckily my husband found a group in facebook for the coton's and Israel and after two weeks we went to see our puppy. it was hard to choose one as they all were extremely cute, but when my husband took one of them he immediately fell in love with him.
Today he's 3/5 months years old. He's adorable and cute and loving little dog who just want to play and lick you all day long.
We're still learning about him as his behavior, so more to come later on.

I'm 28 y/o and I am onto my second coton. My puppy, Cousteau is 10 m/o and he is so much fun! I feel like I am well experienced in Coton de Tulear behavior. Especially the males. My former coton, Gaston was also a determined male who passed away on my chest this summer. While the boys can be a handful sometimes, I much prefer their personality & creativity! Let me know if you have questions or need strategies...

My sweet little ball of cuteness, Reno

by Julie
(Albany, NY)

We have had our Coton de Tulear, Reno for almost 2 weeks. He is 10 weeks old today. He is the sweetest puppy I've ever met. He sleeps through the night and is doing EXCELLENT with house-training.

I can already see how smart he is. He has learned how to sit, stay, lay down, give his paw, and come when called (not every time but we are working on that). Everywhere we bring him his precious little face just melts people. He is very playful and outgoing yet very mellow at times.

He has such a well-balanced personality. I am excited to watch him grow and am looking forward to many years of his companionship.

Stella is the best judge of character. CM has a dersernable reputation for being hard handed while training dogs. Look at Stella, she is not happy to be in the lap of such danger. He has created gppd PR for himself, but where he stands with other professional trainers, he is a zero. I would not trust any dog into his care.

He is also more fretful and hysterical about me leaving (I hav so many Dr. appointments and physical therapy appointments and he is going crazy home alone.Yes, believe me, I follow all the advice, ignore him, drug him (benedryl ) it does not help.
Send Cesar to my house.
thanks

Foot washing for free ~ By Annie and Lucy

by Helen Harville
(Hamilton, Ohio)

Annie, my sweet coton needed someone who could run and play at her fast pace as I couldn't because of a bum knee. I was afraid of getting another coton de tulear.... afraid I would compare the two and that certainly there could never be another one as sweet and good as Annie.

I decided on Lucy, a Havanese and Shitzu mix. They play great together and again.... there's surely not another mix out there like Lucy! (Don't we all feel that way about our babies??)

Anyway, they love to give me 'foot washings' and Annie is thorough in getting in between the toes! Such special treatment from my girls ~ love 'em to death!

Foot washing for free
by: Helen Harville

Annie is only two years old and Lucy is 6 months old now. They play great and because Annie is longer legged than Lucy she can still outrun her. Cotons are great speed runners.... but Lucy gives it her best and also does a quick turn around to head Annie off coming the other way! I posted pics but they didn't show.... I'll try posting them again. Thanks for reading and commenting on the foot washing!

JR couldn't play with our older dogs when we got him - they were 15 and 14. Since we've gotten little boy 2 - they play wonderfully together. Don't get me wrong - sometimes when JR is done - he's done and let's little boy KNOW it. They have been GREAT for one another. Little Boy cleans JR's ears. JR has some allergy problems in the summer mostly. Joyce

Feet
by: Ellie

That sounds sooo good. Aside from the foot washing (could use some of that) has Lucy challenged Annie to run and play? My sweetheart, Oliver, has so much energy, but whenever he has a play
date, they play for a few minutes and then just give it up. I, too, want another little love, but am afraid it might backfire.
Anyway, sounds like the perfect situation for you. Good Luck.

Niko loves to please. He is certified with "Therapy Dog International" and visits Hospitals, Assisted Living and Senior Living facilities. He is so kind and gentle to patients, staff and families. He also loves to run and play as you can see him running his Agility course. The Coton de tulear has to be one the worlds best breeds.

My New Boy Toby

by Stephanie
(Honolulu, HI)

Toby

Toby

I got Toby when he was 13 weeks and he is now 5 months old. He is a really good dog and loves my other dog, Max. Toby is almost completely potty trained. I'm so fortunate that he doesn't pee or mark in the house. I didn't crate train him and he basically runs around the house with my other dog. The only issue I have with Toby is that he will bark at people and other dogs when we go for a walk. However, he doesn't bark when people come to our house. What is the best way to teach him not to bark?

Toby is so cute
by: Vicky from Az

He is still a baby. His barking is probably from the fear of big tall people passing by. Try getting him out to the dog park to meet people & dogs so he learns not to fear them.

Another trick for barking outside in ur yard thou is when he starts barking at neighborhood sounds go stand beside him with treats. Use a 3 sec rule that when the barking stops u say good boy & treat. U then can apply the verbal command quiet.

Be consistant & within 1 to 2 weeks when u look out ur door & say quiet he will listen.

Another command that works in diff. situations is a must the leave it. It can be applied to in home mischeif & while walking to avoid the chasing of cats, cars, skateboards & other dogs.

Good luck

Giovanni & Natasha Summer 2011

by Lana
(New York)

If not for my Cotons who knows what shape my life would’ve taken this year. It was hard to breathe & face another day coming…

One day while scrolling the web I came across a lovely Coton de Tulear’s face. Since that moment I could not let one thought go: “I need Coton , I love this dog, I have to have this adorable face looking into my eyes every day”. I did not know anything about Cotons but was determined to be the best dog owner I can be. It’s only fair to this lovely Ball of White Happiness.

I cannot describe to you my feelings the day I was picking up my first Coton from the dog breeder who came to NY to meet with me. Thanks for Youtube.com I was able to see my Gio before we met in person and get to know his brothers and sisters as well.

He was the most active puppy on the screen, jumping up and down, in & out of a big tub & I fell instantly in love with him. The breeder said he has the biggest personality there is. So true! Very emotional and sweet, companionate and happy, larger then life personality.

We became very close & protective over each other. He was very shy at first but his time long gone…

I stopped randomly crying in coffee shops while talking to my friends & little by little took my life under control if you will. The only thing was bothering me - my Gio was lonely home while I was gone, so I called the same dog breeder & a friend by then, to get another puppy, a girl perhaps. My little son jumped with happiness that day and said to me: ”Mommy you are crazy in a good way, I love you!”

Natasha is my son’s favorite girl now. She is sweet and very beautiful; she is cleaning herself day and night, loves to eat and runs like the wind. She always wins the race in the game. A dream girl!

Giovanni will be 1 year old this December, Natasha is 9 months only. We love them more then words can say and they love us back. Giovanni is trying to saying “mama “, he loves to walk in the rain. He has a big heart!

They changed our life & my children are always happy to play & be with both of them. Can you blame them?!
God Bless Cotons !!!

Bless ur wonderful family
by: Vicky & Jonah (Az)

I read ur post & it sounded so true to life. Jonah came to me my 53 b-day & saved my life. When my Silky Samantha passed 2 yrs. prior it was the 1st time I had lived without a dog. I was sad in my life & was not moving forward. I was browsing the "Little Shopper" paper on my b-day who listed finding a home for this Coton. I had looked for this breed prior to my Silkys but they were so rare & hard to find.

Here Lucy had been a poodle breeder (retired) who spent 2 yrs looking for this breed from meeting one at a show. Unfortunatly between immediate health of her son & husband she had to find a home for 6mo. old Jonah. I purchased him the next day. I keep his name in honor of her.

I wake up now every morning & thank God for Jonah. He turns 4 Dec.6. We now socialize at the dag park where I have meet some wonderful friends. We walk daily & veg together I am blessed. Thank u for ur wonderful story. Many happy holidays to u & ur family & God bless.

Bella and Henry

Bella and Henry

Bella and Henry

Bella (black/white) and Henry are playmates and wonderful additions to my home! Bella was born in March 2008; Henry celebrates his birthday in July and he will be 6 this year! Bella loves her tummy rubbed, and Henry enjoys teasing her by taking her favorite toy.

We have a third dog, a rescue Bichon we have named Oscar. Both Bella and Henry welcomed Oscar to our home in 2009 and continue to tolerate Oscar's skittish behavior. Oscar came from a puppy mill and has slowly let down his guard and is bonding with all of us.

My pups are wonderful, loving, playful, and I am not sure what I would do without them!

Tassie Foo Fancy Pants

by Lynda Owen
(Las Vegas, NV)

Our Coton de Tulear, Tassie, began her life with our family flying across country (First Class OF COURSE). When she and I arrived home, there was a big Welcome Home Tassie sign with all the neighbors waiting to meet her.

She is the first little dog in our household, but don't tell her that, she thinks she is every bit as big as the rotty. Then, in 2008 when the food poisoning hit, all 3 of our dogs and 2 cats were stricken with liver damage. Fortunately they all survived, but Tassie still battles with the weight gain it caused. She was destined for great things, and as you can tell quite the survivor.

The Coton is the most amazing of any breed I have ever known. Stand by for future updates!!

Couch Toppers
by: Iris Miller

I'm laughing out loud!!! LOL!!! Last night Tuffy fell asleep perched on top of the couch and startled awake caught himself as he started rolling off the edge. He was pretty confused because that has never happened before. I sometimes wonder if the Coton breed was somehow mixed with Cats and Lemurs. Maybe some mad scientist on the island of Madagascar created a super dog, so lovable and talented. Reading all the comments about Coton personality makes me believe they were all cut from the same mold.

I hope some day we can gather together in one place, wouldn't that be something!? Tuffy is definitely most attracted to other dogs that look like him. He was in love with an "older woman" a little white dog who was five years older than him, who frequently visited our neighbor. I think she was a toy poodle mix but looked like a delicate Coton princess. Tuffy was all ga ga over her. I have to find the pictures to post here, we invited her in to play with Tuffy one day, I took a picture of her leaving in the car with Tuffy watching so forlorn. Lovers parting forever, so sad!

Coton from NC
by: Lourdes

Sorry It took sooo long to answer. I was away.
Bella is 2 1/2 years old. She does not have a puppy short cut because I prefer her semi-long hair...like the picture. I ask the grooming salon to cut it that way.
She weights 12 pounds and likes to eat a lot.
We say Bella is part rabbit (Seeing her back legs when she runs), part cat (she jumps onto the breakfast table, to the kitchen counter and the top of the couch.

We also say she is part chicken...because she is really afraid of storms, strong noises when something drops and plastic bags.

She has particular barks for different situations, but she really talks and tends to go to the person that she knows will understand her to communicate. If we get dressed up, when coming down the stairs, as soon as she see us she makes a long high pitch howl as though saying how beautiful we are. But she also has different pitches and sound that she modulates in various ways.
She also says yes when I ask her if she wants to go out. She moves her head or barks one time or sneezes.

She comes to me when there is somebody walking around the house and pulls on my pants or touches my leg for me to go see.

I try to bathe Bella every two weeks. She does not have a smell, only when she has a bath...the smell of wet hair.

Bella has to be combed every day to get rid of the matts. We use a brush and a comb for the matts, that way we do not have to cut the matts.

The speed running around the house or yard is very funny...Bella comes to my computer room and pulls my pants. The she looks at me like telling me it is play time!

Cel...It is funny that my mother's name is Calliope (she is Greek), and her nickname is Bella. My daughter named Bella after my mother's nickname.

I love the cotons. Her life's joy is the simple task of making us laugh.

Grooming tips
by: Sudha

I have a 3 yr old and he loves to be combed falls asleep on my lap but i do have to comb him section by section every week or there are matts, when i find a matt i cut it in the middle of the matt and comb it out. He has so much hair that a snip here and there really you don't even see a bald spot. I am also lucky that he loves the hair dryer :)

Bella
by: Carol

Bella is soooooooo cute..Is that a puppy cut? how old is Bella and how much does she weigh?

My little maxine..boo hoo...she is 9months old and starting to get her adult coat..so it was only 4 weeks between last bath and tidy and this one..she was so matted.(trying to get her to sit still to comb her) so she was cut real short...she looks like a little lamb..doesn't even look like the same dog..we think she misses her long hair that would blow in the wind when she had one of her running attacks..and boy she can outrun any big dog..it is amazing..

any grooming tips?

talking dogs
by: Iris Miller

Tuffy also does the speed run and jumping and talks. Since he was a baby he hums himself to sleep, he moans, he has squeaks and squeals and different barks.I also believe he has e.s.p. and telepathic ability.

Jake and Ellie do the same thing...it's like a tornado going through the house...Jake will sing with the high notes on the piano or a recorder. He also sings with the violin...not sure if it hurts his ears. They are a blessing for us every day!!! Imagine getting that kind of endless, unconditional love from every human you meet! Wouldn't life be grand!!!

Playing
by: Cel

My Calliope loves to run and play at around 5 in the morning. She is a crazy lady running up and down the stairs, on the couch, over the coffee table. She is so much fun to watch. I wish I had that much energy in the morning.

TALKING COTONS
by: Chris

If you are referring to that special little, "woof ~ woof~ woof" bark, so different from the other barking , then Lilly Belle talks also. At least, this is what we call her communicating. It seems, she so wants to get something across, especially with family and friends who stop by. It's like: "See me and pay attention to me, because I want to play"! Really very endearing! Also, she gets into her olympic gold running mode and does many fast circles around the room or the couch and it is amazing how fast she runs and corners. I believe this may be a characteristic of this special breed. She knows when she needs that exercise and does it with enthusiasm!
Just love this small breed. Very wonderful doggies!

Apr 21, 2011
talking
by: Laura

My Lizzie grunts and I call it talking....she also snores like a truck driver. She loves to be chased, runs into the shower and then peeks out.

My Gracie just runs thru the house like a crazy lady, on the bed, on the sofas, in circles. Gotta love these Cotons. She doesn't talk at all.

I know I wondered about our JR - but whether he is or not - I'm sure Henry's wonderful. I know it doesn't matter to us - JR has a lot of traits that I think he could be after reading about them. It's what you perceive him to be. A wonderful friend and companion. I know on our return from anywhere - JR greets us like we've been gone for years not 1/2 hour or so. Bandith

One and a half years ago I was looking for a dog and a friend at work said she had the perfect dog for me, a 3 year old Coton de Tulear that needed a new home. I went to see the dog and it was love at first sight. He came home with me the same day. Bandith was imported from Denmark and is among the first Coton dogs we have in my country.

Kissy....yes she is!!

by Skip Nelson
(Edmonds, Washington, USA)

I was looking for a small dog. I put an ad in Craigslist for a Havanese. A reader sent me an e-mail and told me she had a Coton de Tulear that she needed to find a good home for. I had no idea what kind of dog this was, so I did searches on the internet. I found absolutely no negatives about this dog...except maybe for the fact that you have to groom frequently. I decided to meet the lady and take a look.

Upon my arrival, I saw that "Kissy" was friendly but somewhat reserved. She was also a little dirty, and looked like she had some matting. From the attitude of the lady, I could tell that Kissy might have been a little neglected. I decided to take her.

I took her to the groomer immediately and was informed that she had a bad ear infection and that I should take her to the vet immediately, which I did. I got her gone over and got medication for the infection, and had her teeth cleaned. That was four months ago.

Kissy has brought us so much happiness and fun. I love this dog!!

Grats!
by: Mitchell Tuckness

She probably neglected the dog not because she didn't love him it's just that the adults hair can be, time consuming to keep brushed and healthy. I might suggest you have the hair trimmed in front of her eyes as the hair gets in the dogs eyes and can later in life cause issues.

Other than that, they are the best companion dogs out there, loyal, protective and not tiny.

Enjoy her while you can!

Kissy is a Cutie
by: Anne Glenmoore

Lucky you to find such a great dog. We adopted our Molly and had no idea what kind of dog she was. Through research and a knowledgeable dog owner, we found out Molly is a Coton de Tulear.

We absolutely love her - she is a dear like your Kissy. We are hooked on this breed. You can't find a more enjoyable, happy companion. You are both lucky to have found each other. Best wishes for a happy life together.

You rock!
by: Julia

What a wonderful story! I am so glad Kissy has found new owners who will love her and not neglect her! Frankie, our Coton, is prone to ear infections and gets his teeth cleaned yearly- he would be so unhappy if we didn't groom him as often or take him to the vet when he needed it. So sad that anyone could neglect such amazing dogs, but amazing when someone like you comes along and gives them a new chance at a living a happy, comfortable life =-)

Coton de Tulear, Maximus

by Michael Dubos
(Los Angeles, CA)

You must food, don't you?

You must food, don't you?

Rescued Max on Dec 28th while driving home. He was in the right hand lane of the FWY when I spotted and just missed hitting him. I stopped, put on my emergencies and chased him until he stopped, let me pick him up and put him in the car.

I did not want a dog and never had one so I took him to the shelter. I could not stop thinking about him so I went to the shelter everyday until the 5 day waiting day period was over and adopted him on New Years Day, 2011. No one could figure out what he was until we recently discovered that he was... a Coton de Tulear.

Congratulations
by: Anne Glenmoore

You are so lucky to have found Maximus. He is absolutely adorable. We too rescued a Coton - we named her Molly. She was abandoned in Philadelphia and we found her at a no-kill ranch. That was the luckiest day of our lives. My husband and I have fallen completely in love with her and this breed. We have had her a year and everyday gets better. Good luck with Maximus. He is a gem and thank you for not forgetting him at the SPCA. We will be rescuing a new dog - so Molly has a companion. Will be posting their picture as soon as the adoption has been finalized.

My little Coton de Tulear, Angel Pashu

by Fabi
(Sao Paulo, SP, Brazil)

I live in Brazil. So you all can imagine how rare is to have a Coton in the country. Pashu is a male Coton de Tulear and he is 7 years old. He was given to me as a gift when I was passing through a very hard time in my life and he just became my sunshine, that´s why I often call him as my angel.

All who owns a Coton knows how friendly and happy they are, Cotons are always smiling and love to be close to us. That´s why everyday I´m very thankful for him to be part of my life!

“Niko” A Christmas in July

by Kirk Clemence
(Taylor, Michigan 48180)

Niko

Niko

On July 13, 2009 our 8 week old Coton de Tulear made his first car ride home. From that day on “Niko” has won our hearts in many ways. He can be counted on to be at the door to greet you with a big smile, wagging tail and a kiss. Each night as he starts to wind down he will cuddle with you until he is put in his crate for the night. Niko is very smart. He rings his bell to go outside and walks down three layers of deck along with seven sets of stairs to get to his grass. His favorite place outside is the lounge chair. Niko is also very amusing. He loves to do tricks like roll over and dance. He doesn’t mind when his 5 year old niece carries him around. He loves people and other pets, the more the merrier. Being hypoallergenic and non-shedding is a bonus. Niko has made our family complete and truly gave us a Christmas in July.

Abby is 1 1/2 years old and very sweet. Her favorite things to do are (1) snuggle or stick with Mom (like Velcro), (2) go to the park, (3) Meet others, including little kids, and have them play with me--after all, 'It's all about me,' isn't it?.

Our New Coton de Tulear Addition - Tyler

by Deb
(Rhode Island)

Tyler

Tyler

I had been hinting to my husband that I wanted a puppy for over a year. A friend of mine called me one Friday afternoon to tell me there are Coton de Tulear puppies ready to leave their mommie.

I took the hour ride by myself just to "look" at the puppies! I immediately fell in love with "Tyler". I was drawn to his coloring, markings and mischievous beahavior. I gave the breeder a deposit and brought my husband back the next day for him to "look" at the puppies. He didn't know I left a deposit, but ironically he loved the same puppy I had secretly chosen!! He said Happy Valentine's Day, let's take the little guy :)

It's been 3 months and we just adore Tyler. Can't imagine life without him! And he's potty trained! We installed a doggie door and he loves the freedom of coming and going - when he needs to!

Thanks for all your posts! Tyler is our first Coton and I'm so glad we decided on this breed. He is loveble, sweet, funny and smart. I do have to tell you though, I brought him for his first hair cut yesterday to prepare him for the summer and the groomer cut him way too short. Although he looks adorable,he looks like a Bijon, he's lost that Coton look. I hope it doesn't take too long for it grow back. I'll be searching for a new groomer who really knows how to groom a Coton!

My Coton dog thinks he's a cat

by Gale

Luc stuck in the cat toy

Luc stuck in the cat toy

I already had a cat when I first brought my dog Luc home. Apparently he's been influenced more by Lila the cat than I thought. They are great friends and I guess Luc just wants to be able to do the same things the cat does.

These 2 photos cracked me up. First he got stuck in the cat toy and then he almost got stuck going through the cat door. He also loves cat food so I have to make sure her dish is set high enough so he can't reach it. I don't have the heart to tell him he's not a cat:)

by: AndreaB

Izzy my coton acts like a cat and obviously thinks she is one. I constantly find her rummaging around ON THE kitchen table, or on the kitchen counters or on the washing machine. She leaps high like a pogo stick, jumps onto the sofa over the back and literally flies around the house.

I just love this puppy and her antics -- but she does get into a lot of trouble.

my cat thinks he's a dog
by: Anonymous

We have some confused animals at our house also. Our cat, Felix, seems to have learned a lot from our Coton. Felix likes to play fetch, play with dog toys, and we've caught him trying to eat dog food a few times. He also comes when you call him (rare for a cat) and greets us at the door when we come home like our dog. They like to chase each other around the house but we're not sure who's chasing who.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/overcon/

Just wanted to drop buy and say that Moriarty is doing great, here is one picture of him at a year and a half old and a couple others when he was younger before I had his hair trimmed so he could see!

I wish their hair was easier to keep from matting, but with brushing and a once a week visit to the groomer he stays nice and fluffy!

I still love him more than ever, he is my constant companion, his favorite thing in the world is to go for a car ride. I grab my keys and he just starts jumping and going nuts. He is sleeping right next to me as I type this on my laptop on the bed.

Thanks so much for all of the information. I can not believe how much I am learning from all of you and I don't even have my Zooey yet! I very much appreciate your insight and know I'll be full of questions as time goes on. Enjoy those beautiful dogs of yours.

Info
by: Mitchell Tuckness

One thing that is not mentioned a lot is that Cotons seem to love to root around in the dirt, so if you have a yard that has moist or soft dirt, they will sniff around in it and come back in with black feet and mustaches, so don't let it get to you. Also, when they are puppies they can sometimes have messes when they go poop and get it in their hair so make sure you or the groomer shaves the "Poop Track" so they can go without it catching on their hair. And don't get upset if it does, just give em a batch :)

Most important things to remember for owning a Coton are:

1. The puppy hair is different then the adult hair.
2. They need lots of brushing and combing when they have long adult hair.
3. You should get a good leave in conditioner / detangler spray to use when brushing them so it's easier to get the brush / comb through the hair.
4. They are a vocal breed, tend to bark a lot when people come over / out the windows etc, so training to help reduce that should be started as soon as possible.
5 They are protective of you. For example when I get home and I am saying high to all the dogs, Moriarty will chase the ones I am trying to pet away till I say hi to him first! He sounds vicious but he has never bitten any of the dogs, he just chases them away till I can rub his belly.
6. They are smart!
7. They love to root around in the dirt and grass, I wouldn't call them a digger breed but I would say they love to look into stuff to see if there is anything to chase. (Maybe it's from their pirate ship days chasing rats on the ships as they crossed the Atlantic! :)
8. Since they are a small breed they will have teeth problems if you don't brush their teeth. Even with all the food and treats that say they help with keeping teeth clean they don't help the front teeth so those need to be brushed with dog toothpaste. I always had large dogs and while it is the same for them, it takes them a lot longer to have issues. Moriarty is only 1y6m old and already had red gums on his front canines and teeth. That is when the vet told me about small breed dogs and the need to brush the front teeth every day. It's real easy and Moriarty doesn't mind it any more, even though he would rather lick the tooth paste off the tooth brush then off his teeth after I brush them :)

I use an all natural tarter control dog tooth paste called Kissables I get off of Amazon.

Apr 14, 2012
Matting
by: Anonymous

If you leave the coat long, Since the hair is so fine and it really is like spun cotton, it tends to clump and matt, so you have to brush them at least once every other day. It has to be a through brush and if you can, get a good spray in conditioner to help keep it soft white you bruch.
You can also get their hair cut short, which is what people call a puppy cut. Personally I don't like the puppy cut because then I just have a fancy Maltese or Bishon looking dog :)
The personality, intelligence, loyalty and attitude are worth the effort in my opinion, but a puppy cut would defenetly be easier to maintain and you can still tell people the breeds name when they ask and they will still go, what? Never heard of that breed before :)

Coton Grooming
by: Sandy

Our Coton, Pixie, is only 4 months old. We just brush her a couple times a week. She loves to play outside in the wet grass then the dirt around the tree so we bathe her frequently and blow dry her. She loves the attention. She's been to the groomer once just to have hair trimmed around her eyes, other than that it is just brushing her a couple times weekly. I do understand that the puppy hair differs from the adult hair so not sure about that yet. Good Luck and don't let this stop you from going with a Coton as they are spunky characters : )

hair not fur
by: GASTON

I believe that a puppy cut is the easiest to maintain. However its fun to wild hair cuts, but that requires more brushing and trimming. I keep a small pair of round nose scissors by the back door for little touch ups.

Zoey on adoption day!

Zoey on adoption day!

I adopted Zoey from a rescue group who thought she was part Maltese. I saw a show featuring Cotons on Animal Planet and was amazed to see Zoey! She fits the physical appearance and traits of a Coton de Tulear, and now I'm wondering if she is, in fact, one of these wonderful dogs! I had never heard of this breed before now. I am going to ask my vet what she thinks and see if there is a way to find out for sure!

I live in Az. now but grew up in the east Pa. How funny I forgot what fresh wet grass does since it has been a while. Out here the grass is not that wet unless u water before u mow & who does that. what a doll. Great picture.

by: Anonymous

So adorable. My Coton is such a girly girl and hates to get her feet wet or dirty so this is one problem I probably will never have to deal with. Amie is beautiful even when she's green.

love it!
by: liz

So glad I am not alone, Fifi often comes in with wellies but there is something about their hair that seems to repel dirt/mud/grass stains as quick as they acquire them.

Our Coton de Tulear, Keenan was worth the wait! It had been 12 years since we last had a dog. Keenan is a little scamp who is full of personality and loves to tease (as you can see here). He fits right into our family!

Coton de Tulear Pele dresses up

by April
(San Diego, CA)

Our Coton is just 21 weeks old. My mother had been waiting months for him to be born and she finally got him home the weekend of July 4th. She passed away unexpectedly on July 9 and we were left with this little bundle of love. Pele has brought untold joy to my girls and our family and he's helped ease the tremendous loss we feel every day.

My youngest daughter wanted to dress him up for Halloween, we're not sure if he's supposed to be a Pilgrim or a Witch, but either way it's too cute not to share (yes, he's very shaggy right now, we're finishing up shots so he can go to the groomer).

He's still a naughty puppy and finds himself in time out quite a bit, but he's got a heart of gold and is so smart, he learns quickly what isn't ok to do!

I love this . So glad that this little doggie is bringing some comfort during your loss.
We love our Coton, Lilly Belle. She is everything we wanted in a little dog and much more. Yes, this breed learns quickly what is expected and seem anxious to please.
Have fun and consider Pele as a gift from God.

sneaky is the word
by: Anonymous

Every time that my coton goes over to my mom house. She first needs to run around like a flying ball. Then when we are not looking she jumps up on the sofa and walk to the end table. Where my mother keeps her phone. She knows how to hit the message button on the phone. So, now when you call my mom's machine you no longer get "can you please leave a message" You get "Sandy(my coton name) get down from there." This has happen three or four times. She loves to play this game.

SNEAKY BELLA
by: SHERRY/COTTON

I AGREE THEY CAN BE SO SNEAKY, BUT SWEET. THERE MUST BE SOMETHING IN ALL OF THEM WIRED INTO THEIR LITTLE BRAINS.
I HAVE HAD DOGS ALL MY LIFE BUT THEIR IS SOMETHING SO WONDERFUL ABOUT THIS BREED. MY LITTLE COTTON IS JUST THE MOST PERFECT PET. DO NOT HOW I WE GOT ALONG WITHOUT HER.

GOOD LUCK WITH BELLA, SHE IS BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!

Robber Rylee
by: Rylee's "Mom"

Rylee likes to steal socks and clean underwear. She then chews on them until they are soaked with slobber. As long as Rylee doesn't eat the socks, I don't mind.

sneaky Cotons and cute Bella
by: Iris Miller

yes! Bella is adorable!
Tuffy is so funny when he sneaks stuff, it's another game he plays.Healways pulls the socks off our feet and runs away, the idea of course it to chase him and try to wrestle it back from him. He especially likes to "steal"the empty toilet paper rolls(I leave one for him to find) from the bathroom. If I catch him doing it I call out "thief" and he looks around like he hasn't a clue it's him, the he snatches it upand runs way to tear it to pieces.GRINCH THis dog continues to amaze and amuse me. I love him So much!

Sneaky sneaky
by: Anonymous

Perfectly adorable and they have the most amazing personalities but they are sneaky my babies can open up the cabinets in my bathroom which leads to their favorite game....lets sneak into the bathroom hamper cabinet and steal a few clothing items and hide them just to see how long it takes to find them.

My wonderful Coton de Tulear, Gracie

by Debbie Rose
(Palm Springs, CA)

Gracie at the beach

Gracie at the beach

I am in love with my Coton-de-Tulear, Gracie. She is 6 yrs. old and such a great dog. Always faithful, loving and loves to be near us. I know a lot of dogs may be like that, but she is special.

Her hair is soft like cotton but it can be one of the more challenging parts of this breed-they need to be brushed often, but I usually keep her in a shorter cut. My family has allergies and she is a dog no one is allergic to, doesn't shed and just sweet.

Can you tell I love my Coton?

I understand those blank stares when people ask what kind of dog and you tell them. Many think they're so smart and know already (they usually guess Maltese), but these dogs are not yippy and are great with kids.

Hi Oliver,

I read your post. You live right near me! Where were you born? I was from a breeder in Phoenix,
Yulon. My family waited many months for me to be born.
See you!

Oliver is in the neighborhood
by: Ed & Suzanne

Hello Gracie:

Oliver here..of course, my human is writing this for me. I saw your picture and you look like we might be related! If you check my photo, my hair was a bit longer and I was a bit younger. I am grown up now at 6 years old, like you. If you are in the neighborhood (Rancho Mirage) sometime, end me an email and maybe we can meet and share a ball or something!

You are a very beautiful girl!

Best Regards,

Ollie

Thank you so much for sharing your photo and story about Gracie. She looks like such a free spirit with her hair blowing in the wind at the beach.

I really appreciate you taking the time to tell us about your girl Gracie. I get a lot of people coming to this site trying to determine if the Coton de Tulear is the right breed for them. The best way they can learn is to hear from real owners and their experiences - so thanks again for sharing.

tv cotons
by: sherry

my little girl also likes to watch tv - especially animal planet.
we love her little low woof woof's when she sees the other animals.
commercials also grab her attention, must be the loud volume of them. cotons are such cute little creatures!!!!

it is nice to share stories and compare our loving animals with each other. they all seem to have the same actions. she loves to play fetch and after a few minutes will be so excited she runs in circles around the room, then collapses and takes her beauty nap!!

Maxine looks very smart!
by: Katherine

Murphy likes to do the same thing. He also likes to sit on my lap when I do my make-up in the morning! I have to include him in some way, so he looks into the mirror as I give him a quick brushing! He's so proud of himself afterwards! Maxine & Murphy would make quite a pair!

My Little White Shadow

by Dianna Hannah
(Spotsylvania,VA USA)

I have a 6-month male Coton de Tulear named Atlas. He follows me everywhere I go. I once went in the laundry room to wash clothes, looked around to see him (he's usually ALWAYS behind me) and couldn't find him. I eventually saw him "sitting" in the cat's litter box. He wasn't trying to eat anything, he was just sitting there looking pretty. I had to laugh. Guess he sees the cats use it.

He also enjoys stuffed animals and will sit for hours sucking on either a tail or nose like a pacifier. He's a lot of fun!
