Coton de Tulear dogs and hurricanes

(Florida)

I hope all of you and your precious Cotons on the east coast are doing well after Hurricane Irene. I know so many of you live in that part of the country and I thought about you all weekend.

Having lived through many hurricanes here in Florida I know how stressful it is preparing for a big storm and worrying about the safety of your family and pets. It can be equally stressful once the storm has passed and you're just so hot and exhausted. I remember after we lost power during our last major hurricane I'd take my dog for a long ride in the car several times a day just so we could get some air conditioning relief.

Let us know how you and your Cotons are doing.

Rudy's first hurricane
by: Angela

We felt the hurricane here in central NJ and I was worried about my puppy. The wind noise and the heavy rain pouncing the windows did not affect him - so that was a relief. I was worried about the potty breaks and how we would accomplish that task. I was afraid to take him outside on Sunday due to the heavy winds and rain. I had wee wee pads available and thought I would put them in my basement or garage and tempt him to go there. As it turned out, I was able to find the right calming point in the weather to run him outside. I think I am going to train him to use the wee wee pads for "emergency" situations when the outdoors is not an option. I had plenty of adult food/water and dog food/water in case of power outages and the such but we got very lucky and were not affected in that way. Last year we had a very rough snowy winter and now a rough end of the summer - but we survived the storms! Funny, now that I have a dog, I worry so much more and think more in advance - I have children too - but a dog is different - they depend on you for everything and I mean everything. Cute little guys.

Jasmine from pa
by: cathy

We also live in PA only received wind and rain. Didn't phase Jasmine one bit slept the entire night. In the morning cried to go on the porch! I held her and explained it was raining and windy but like a little kid cried by the door. This morning the sun was out and she couldn't wait to get outside.

Spanky's 1st hurricane
by: Dee

Thanks for posting your concerns. I live on Long Island, NY on the nassau / queens border. The prep alone for this beast of a storm was stressful enough... you could not find milk, bread, peanut butter, water, battereis or generators anywhere... now that the storm has passed, everything seems to be restocked. We packed our go kits, one for spanky too, just in case there was a reason to split in a hurry. I also kept his harness and tags on just in case we had to run. Poor spanky, 6 lbs, could not go out for walks for 24 hrs. We are very lucky, we did not get the brunt of this storm and we feel very blessed. Sunday afternoon, Irene finally showed signs of relief and i was able to take Spanky for a walk outside... after only releaving himeslf on the wee wee pad the night before (and that was hard to get him to do!) he was tickled pink to be outside and visiting friends in the hood. although, not easy as it was still windy and with trees down here and there, we managed and he was thrilled. He did ok during the storm, altough from time to time was a bit weirded out, for the most part he was the angle i know and love. We are getting back into our routine. And he is happy and loving as he always is. So glad to have him, we love him so much, i can not imagine life without him!!!! Thanks again for asking. A ok over here! THank goodness!
