Concern about brown spots on Coton de Tulear skin

by Emily

My mom was concerned because she gave our Coton de Tulear a bath & noticed more brown spots on his skin- I was thinking it was just because he has a shorter haircut than normal that we can see them. Do they get more spots as they get older, or were they probably there?

Coton Spots
by: Anonymous

The Coton de Tulear possess a very strong color dilution gene in their coat whereby the color fades out as the hair grows. Most adult Cotons will be white or champagne in color.
As for the spots, it is probably pigment. Cotons also have dark pigment and may look spotted on the skin. It's simply dark pigment. You may see changes and more spots as the Coton ages.

The color gone, the spots remained
by: Iris Miller

I wrote a previous comment about my Coton Tuffy when he was a little puppy. Tuffy had a lot of different color spots all over his face and body, shades of brown. cream, and black, which I loved and did not know he would end up all white (After his first haircut). His parents are all white as well. I was very dissapointed when his hair grew back all white, he was so pretty with the colors. (see pictures).
When I bathe Tuffy I can see all the dark areas on his skin where the colored hair used to be. It reminds me of a saying I heard, about can't remove the spots on a leopard, (can't remember the exact quotation).
Good advice Gale, thank you for that, because I notice last summer how pink Tuffy's skin is, almost albino pink, and how sensitive it must be to the sun's rays, and a good reason to check periodically and make sure there are no signs of skin cancer.
blessings and love,
Iris and Tuffy

Brown spots on white dog
by: Gale

It's hard to give a definitive answer without knowing more details, but in general, brown spots are pretty common as dogs get older. I've read that
they're especially common in white dogs like the Coton de Tulear.

What you have to watch out for is if there's redness around the spots, if the spots are growing, if your dog is sensitive in the area where the spots are, or if the spots are raised instead of flat. If you see any of these conditions you
should definitely see a Veterinarian.
