Caution about shots for your Coton de Tulear

by Kathy
(Canton PA)

This is not a Coton de Tulear question but it may help someone...

When I took Triscuit for her 2 year rabies shot and DHP shot I almost lost her because she went into shock and almost died. I called the Vet when I got home to tell her Triscuit went outside and collapsed in the snow. I took her back to the Vet and she gave her an IV.

She came out of it fine, but I never knew that those shots can cause such an allergic reaction. So for anyone who takes your pups or cats to the Vet for shots, make sure you watch them closely because it could be a matter of life and death.

I am sure it isn't very common, but just keep a good eye out for untoward effects of medicines.

Conjuntivitis in Coton's
by: Anonymous

Our Coton, Spencer has had numerous problems with Conjuntivitis, One's so bad that his eyes were swollen shut. He had to be on antiobiotics and prednisone. He has finally not had one in 6 months ! But his right eye now weeps and discolors his hair around the eye ! We have also found he is highly allergic to flee and tick meds, sea water, some antiobiotics, and some shampoos, and beef. The vet seemed to think of these as the cause. I believe it was the flee shampoo and the Flea and tick meds. He also broke out in huge cystic lesions all over his body from it. They are now gone too !

I feel so lucky
by: Anonymous

After reading these comments, I feel very fortunate that my Murphy didn't have a bad reaction. I am going to mention this to his vet the next time I see him, though. Murphy is his first & only Coton de Tulear, so he should know about this. We have had a couple other issues, though. Conjunctivitis & more recently, a bacteria infection. (He has quite the delicate stomach.) Both have unknown origins. Everything is good now. Thank goodness! I get so upset when he's not perfectly happy. :)

Allergic to shots
by: Anonymous

My Coton also had a problem. Not as severe. She was throwing up and had diahrea and was just miserable. I ran her to the emergency vet and, oddly enough, she was better when I got there. I later found out that the adrenaline from NOT wanting to go to the vet again helped her reaction. They gave her corizone (?) I think and she was better. The fix: She now gets a mild steroid injection before her shots, and she doesn't take the multi-shot, they are separated. More pokes for her, but she's fine.

shots
by: Carol

I don't remember what shot knocked Maxine out but one of them did..My husband had to fight with the vet to NOT give more than one shot at a time.

They do over vaccinate and these little guys are just able to handle that.

Anaphylactic reaction to a triple vaccine
by: Sevi

Hello fellow CDT owners,

Our 11 weeks female Coton de Tulear, Tyche, had an anaphylactic reaction due to a triple vaccination perfomed by the vet.
We went there for the first repetitional vaccination following the one of her first month. Our puppy had an anaphylactic reaction a minute after the shot. Likely, we were still at the vet's and they've put her in oxygen as she become all white in her gums due to low blood pressure, she was also paralized and lethargic. They also gave her a reboost shot with a drug similar to adrenaline. We were really scared and we decided that from now on she will be having one shot at a time. It's a matter of seconds before worse things occur and do not wish my puppy to go through this again.

Her symptoms are best described at the following link: http://www.pet-informed-veterinary-advice-online.com/vaccine-side-effects.html#reaction-five

It's good to know so that we are all aware of unexpected and unpleasant surprises.

Our Tika also got very sick after his last round of tests. he was vomiting and very lethargic. I searched out some help and was told by our breeder that vets often over vaccinate.
we will be better prepared next time.
Triscuit is a cute name :0)

I took my Coton puppy for her third set of puppy shots and the rabies. Hours later her skin turned red and her eyes were swelling...........the vet told me to give her a half teaspoon of liquid benadril.....by the tome we got to the vet she was doing much better....scared me to death.
