Can I give my Coton seedless grapes?

by Dorothy
(Pahrump, NV)

I am 84 yrs. old and have owned dogs since I was 4. I have always shared seedless grapes with them. I now have a wonderful Coton de Tulear named Frosty and have been sharing grapes with her every day for the past 6 months. My daughter-in-law also owns a Cotton and freaked out when she saw me feeding her grapes. She claims they are very dangerous foods for my doggie. She has never shown signs of any ill effects from eating them. What is the true story? Please help, Frosty misses her snacks.

No Grapes For Dogs NEW
by: Anonymous

My three Chinese Crested Powderpuffs regularly go to UC Davis for their veterinary care. I've been cautioned many times by the veterinarians never to feed *any* dog grapes as they are quite toxic to dogs. This includes products sweeten with grape juice, so *do* read those labels.

The webside below "Known toxic Foods for Dogs" say they r toxic & will hurt kidneys. I to for yrs feed my dogs grapes. Pretty much all fruit & veggies I ate. But not anymore since websites like this have come out & shared. Congrats on long dog ownership. I am only 58 & also grew up in a dog household & still do. Have many more wonderful yrs.

Grapes and other No No's
by: Cathy

Most people know not to give dogs chocolate and grapes/raisins, but I saw several things when researching dog toxins which I did not know. Check out the links below, they are similar, but one says to avoid baby food as it can contain onion powder.

agree with everyone else

just to give you an example, on one of the coton facebook pages, one of the owners' cotons (i believe it was the coton who belongs to a couple who are entertainers for a cruise ship that was featured on dogs 101) ate about 5-6 grapes and went into renal failure, requiring dialysis. The owners had to pay about $6000 for this. The coton eventually lived, but I pretty much ban grapes/raisins from the house now.

Known Toxic Food To Dogs

Here is a website that lists certain foods they have been found harnful to dogs. They list rasins & grapes as toxic & can affect the kidneys.

Also ehow.com has a section where it will help u with certain spices & holistic uses. Ex. Sage in moderation is good for dogs & will help promote dental health. Good luck.

GRAPES

I can only advise what my vet informed me about this subject, which was, absolutely no grapes or raisins for my Coton, Bailey. They indicated that they will cause renal failure. I was also given a brochure of all poisionous items for dogs and they were listed in there so I don't give them to her. Bailey loves blueberries, apples, and squash.
Hope this helps.

No to giving grapes to Cotons
by: Anonymous

I would never feed my Coton grapes or raisins - both of which are toxic to animals. They are full of sugar. Large amounts are lethal and as few as 7 or 8 can result in acute renal failure.

Feeding Grapes to Dogs
by: Terry

Dorothy, I have a Coton as well. When she was in obedience training class, the instructor told all of the participants that anything we eat our dogs can eat. I know this not to be true and thought it was not okay for her to say that. So I asked Chloe's vet and he said NO grapes. The best treat you can give them is small pieces of carrot. We don't just treat with carrots; however, we give her mini milkbones from time to time and a limited amount of cheese. She goes crazy over all vegetables like brocolli, carrots and even lettuce. However, not as a consistent item in her daily diet. I doubt that you've done any harm but you might check with your vet and get his/her opinion.
