Barking at the Dog Park

Our Coton (Bode) just turned 1 year old last week. We have started to take him to our local dog park every afternoon after we get home from work to let him socialize with other dogs. The first few times we took Bode to the dog park he did great, played with other dogs and was thoroughly exhausted when we go home.

Now that we have taken him a few times he has developed this strange habit where he will bark at the bigger dogs across the fence (the area is divided into bigger and smaller dog play areas). It has gotten to the point where he will play with the other puppies for maybe 5 minutes and then spend the rest of the time barking at the fence. Any suggestions on what may be wrong and how to stop the barking? We want him to have a good experience at the dog park but it almost seems like it stresses him out to be there.

barking

Our wonderful little guy Polo has a barking issue. He loves everyone he sees close up but when he sees anyone on his street he barks and barks and barks. We discovered the Petsafe bark collar (petsafe.net) which sprays a small amount of citronella when he barks. Now when we put it on we rarely have to turn it on since he suddenly becomes silent as long as he's wearing it. Best investment I've ever made!
DO NOT BUY AN ELECTRIC COLLAR!

Barking

This works for all barking no matter the location. Get some cheerios they r good training treats. When he starts barking go stand beside him.

He barks u say quiet he stops u treat. Once u figure he's getting it use the 3 second rule then treat. Practice, practice, practice. If he at ur window at home stand behind him. Also works for back yards & barking at neighbors.

Their is a good book called 101 dog tricks u can find at Petco to read thru it. It is written by Kyra Sundance & Chalcy which gives step by step & pictures of alot of behavior & tricks.

U can also use pieces of dog food but then subtract from feeding amount. U can also get book on Amazon & they will give u a sample of it.

Please think about the option of positive training & stay away from collars.

barking
by: Rileys mom

Riley barks at big dogs when we walk him on his leash yet he plays with our daughters yellow Lab no problem. We got a bark collar it sprays citrus when he barks, that helped a lot, when he has not been wearing it for a few months he starts barking again, so we put back the collar. It only takes a couple of days and he remembers so we dont use it again.
