Are small Coton de Tulear dogs healthy?

We are interested in purchasing a Coton de Tulear and would like a small one, around six pounds. Are they as healthy as the bigger Cotons? Love the breed and what I have read about it so far. Anyone know where I can find one?

Lightweight cotons
by: Anonymous

I'm surprised that you found such a small coton. Mine is the smallest of five siblings I know and she is 12 pounds. The largest is 18.

But yes, most of the cotons I know are healthy, happy dogs. One has some allergy issues.

The only time I had any health problems with mine were when I got several samples of dog food from the local pet store and tried them out on her all in one week. Her tummy didn't like all that variety but after a day of fasting and a consistent diet after that of one brand of food, she was fine.

Coton lover

My coton is one of the small ones... at 9 weeks was 1.9 lbs. Now, at 5 months he's aprox 6 lbs. I don't expect him to much bigger.

So far, he's happy and healthy, knock on wood that he doesn't develop any issues. My husband and I both agree, he is the best do we have EVER had. So loving, affectionate, SMART AS HECK! Such a fast learner, housebreaking a breeze!!!! We can not imagine life without him. He is my little angel!

7lb Coton

we have a one year old 7 lb angel. Knock on wood, she is very healthy. Get yours from a reputable breeder that you can meet and visit. Do the lineage research.

Small, healthy cotons
by: Chris

We bought a "runt of the litter" since we wanted a female and she was the smallest one ~ at a year and a half she fluctuates between 7 and more than 8 pounds. She is very active and healthy . My husband and I have had large dogs in the past but we are delight ed that Lilly Belle is one of the smaller dogs of this breed. I searched for a long time before deciding on this rare breed and could not be happier! We had her shipped from River Cottage, breeders in Minnesota. Below is a link, so you may contact them. Our experience was very positive and they did everything they promised.

small Cotons
by: Laura

I have two "small" Cotons. They are about 10 lbs. I have never seen 6lb adults. Are you sure you don't want a Maltese?

One of my females has had quite a few health problems, the other is healtier.

They are 8 yrs old and the loves of our lives. I was told that small ones are bred in Europe and like all things American, the American Cotons are larger....then there are the tall cotons.

Hope that helps.
