Are Cotons prone to conjunctivitis?

by Vicki

My Coton de Tulear has had really bad eye conjunctivitis. He has been on steroids, eye meds, and eye drops. The Vet has him on hyperallergenic food.

Do Cotons have an allergy to Advantix type Meds, or flea shampoos? This is when he got the eye problems, and he also got a lot of skin tumors, which finally went away after the Prednisone treatments. Have you heard of this before in Cotons?

Coton Conjunctivitis
by: Gale

Vicki, while there have been some eye problems associated with the Coton, I haven't seen anything that indicates that conjunctivitis is common to the breed. BUT, it is a somewhat common problem for dogs in general - all breeds.

I don't think flea shampoo or Advantix causes conjunctivitis, but ANYTHING that gets in your dog's eyes and irritates them can cause a flare up.

Sounds like your dog is getting good treatment so hopefully won't have any reoccurrences.
