An Irresistable scent

An irrestistable scent!

Does your Coton suddenly discover one spot on the grass or ground that is so irresistable they are mesmerized by it? Do they roll around in it in heavenly bliss to get it all over them, and rub their face all over it? With my Tuffy sometimes it's a plant, grass roots, motor oil or the grossest, once a dead frog!

A dog trainer told me they are scent marking when they do that, but I believe there is more to it than that. Tuffy's actions remind me so much of cat behavior. He looks like a cat drunk on catnip. Is there a plant similar with that effect on dogs?

I look forward to your input on this issue.

pulling up the grass, terrifying screams

Ha ha thanks you guys, Jackson and Bailey. It reminded me of Tuffy last year, he did the same thing, pulling up chunks of grass and tossing it in the air, and digging into the grass until he hit soil and then rubbed in it (he still does this) I nick named him :piglet".
Yesterday in front of the pet supply store he stopped suddenly and went over to the divider in the parking lot that was mostly bark chips, and started rubbing his face into a big patch of green sticker weed! He let out a scream and jumped away from it. Which reminds me, anyone ever heard any other dog scream like the Coton does?
I'd like to know what you all think.

You're not alone

My Coton Jackson who is a little over three months loves to go outside and pull up grass, weeds, pull off bark from the tree, and even rub his nose deep into the grass until he hits dirt.....I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a coton who loves to do this. However, I try to keep it to a minimum because I don't want bald spots in the yard.....lol.

Loves Roots

Hi, My little Bailey is 5 months old and for the last couple of months, he too, loves roots. He digs them up and chews on them. He also eats the tops of dandelions and other plants in the yard. My vet said not to worry about it! I'm glad cause I just enjoy watching him come up with dirt all over his face.

Smelly Cotons

Who knows why dogs do the crazy things they do. Their sense of smell is obviously much different than ours or they wouldn't go around sniffing each others butts.

I too have heard that this can be a sign of marking their territory. I've also heard that some dogs do this after a bath to cover up the smell of perfume contained in many shampoos. It might smell good to us, but not so much to a butt-sniffing dog.

Another theory is that this behavior is their hunting instinct. Covering their own scent with another scent keeps predators from being able to smell where they are.

As far as I know, there are no plants that act like cat nip.

Dogs are so funny aren't they? I wonder what they think of our strange habits.
