Allergies

I just purchased a Coton but do not get him for 5 more weeks. I am getting nervous about being allergic as I am allergic to dogs. They say these dogs are the best for allergies. Does anyone with dog allergies own a Coton and they are fine?

I have severe allergies to dogs.i was told he was hypo allergenic, my doctor said no dog is truly hypo. unfortunately I became allergic to my coton, after 8 months. wheezing, sneezing, etc. of course I can not give him up we love him dearly. I take pills to help and when I hold him I wear a mask !!!!THOUGHT about giving him up but can not do it. I have him on a real food diet which makes it difficult for someone to take him. he s super healthy. washing him twice a week helps. I use an organic gentle puppy shampoo. I have an air purifier which helps. I M HOPING I become tolerant!!!!!!!anyone have any suggestions?

This is an update to my previous question. We received our Coton almost 9 weeks old. What a beautiful precious boy he is but I was allergic 😞 and we had to rehome him with some friends of ours. Good news is we see him a lot and dogsit him often. When we do I take benedryl and I'm fine. He is 13 weeks now and has a wonderful temperament. He is starting to do the head tilt and prefers the floor over couch. He loves to play and is starting to be trained. He Is trained inside and he goes on the piddle place. He's smart enough to know to go outside on walks. We named him Casey and he's truly the best dog!

Yes I do think they need constant attention. That's not to say you can't leave them on their own at all, just that they're not happy about it!

We got Sheldon neutered at 6.5 months old. I think 8 weeks is far too soon. There's lots online about neutering for you to make an informed decision.

Thank you for all the advice and information!! I do not know anyone that has a Coton. I am afraid to get one and if I'm allergic have to rehome like I did my maltese. That was so unbelievably hard!! The comments were encouraging!! We have our Coton on hold for another week. I'll have to decide. My maltese was my first dog so I'm not too experienced. Do these dogs need constant attention. I also have a special needs child I have to care for so I am always home. I also have a question about neutering. Is eight weeks too soon?? The breeder said they could also take care of that as well. I heard 6 months.

no problems with allergies

I am severly allergic to dogs that shed. I rescued a smooth coated brussel griffon. Every time I hold her and she touches my skin, I break out in whelps. Once she licked me in the face and my eye swelled shut. I take two benadryls and claritin every day so that I can keep her. That said, I also have Saylor Jane who is a coton. She licks me in the face, sleeps with me, and is always in my lap. I have never had the slightest symptom from her. My suggestion would be to try and find someone close who has a coton and see if you can arrange to visit with them. I hope it works out. Cotons are amazing!!!

I was worried about this too, as I am allergic to dogs, wheezing, eyes watering, etc etc. But we've had our Coton for over a year now and I can honestly say I've not had any allergic reaction in the slightest. In fact it's been so good we're getting another one in a few weeks!

How did it go when you went to visit the family you got your Coton from & meet the dog mom? Did your allergies act up?
