A friend for our coton de tulear?

by Catherine McKendrick
(Aberdeen, Scotland)

We have had our coton de tulear for almost 4 years now since she was a puppy. We are a big family of 7 but she is very attached to my mum in particular and gets awfully upset when she isn't with her. We were wondering if bringing another dog into the family would be a good idea so that our coton, Brodie, doesn't get so upset and lonely when there isn't a human around to keep her company.

Should we get another coton de tulear or is there a different breed of dog that cotons get on well with? Any help or similar experiences would be appreciated :)

A Friend said it right

I agree with all of the statements posted here on this comment. That is the nature of my dog too. Territorial, oh yes, Tuffy owns the world and is the boss of everyone in it (so he thinks). I call him nosy neighbor, when we go out he sometimes forgets "his business" because he is so busy minding everybody else's (business). He also has separation anxiety, being so sociable, he can't understand why he would not be welcomed everywhere and has to wait at home.He is like a forlorn little child when I leave and a crazy monster when I return, how dare I leave him? He is also quite verbal. Many times I wondered the same, would a companion dog for my companion dog make a difference? Tuffy and I are strongly attached and he is very protective of me, especially towards strangers and other dogs, and especially large dogs. There is of course the cost of owning and maintaining a second Coton. Which would be prohibitive for me. I find it easier to take him to visit the neighbor's two little toy poodles. He races around the yard with the younger one, the older one guards his mom and his territory. After a while they tend to al ignore Tuffy and each other. Tuffy is ultra playful, no person or animal can keep up with him.He loves to run, chase, be chased, play tug of war and wrestle. Also, the longer the walk, the better. To be honest, he is all the exercise I can take!

Friend for a Coton
by: Deborah

We have two males...they are half brothers. Finnegan (3yrs old) was indignant when we went back to our breeder for another puppy. We brought O"Reilly (2yrs old) home and Finnegan took some time bonding w/his brother....Finn and I have been quite close...they both are jealous of one another when it comes to me. They love other Cotons and small dogs...NOT BIG ones... I never thought I would be a person to own two dogs but; I came to love this breed so much...I HAD to have another. I agree w/the one who said they will play and get on w/each other...but; they are COMPANIONS and as such no one will replace their "person".... Good luck!

I have been a breeder of this wonderful dog breed for over 7 years and have come to realize that they are very territorial, and do get along with all breeds, as long as they think they are in charge lol. they also suffer from separation anxiety, thats why she most likely cry's and yelps when the person leaves, but really gets excited when she returns. another dog will keep her occupied, but I doubt it will help her anxiety.

Getting another dog
by: Anonymous

I have a 6 mo old coton and she get's along with any type of dog. She also like to play with any size dog. When I first got her at 10 weeks old I signed her up for puppy class. This made her be around other dogs one day a week. After, the class was over I started taking to the dog park one day a week. She has also spent weekends with my sister 7 year old yorkie. She just lives to play with other dogs. I think it would be a great for your coton to have a playmate. That is if your dog like other dogs as much as mine.
